Default What has been your biggest waste of money? How much was it?
For me, it was this last Otakon convention (2009) in Baltimore, MD. I wasted over 300 dollars on the hotel alone mostly for us to sleep and get clean-up while we spend the rest of the time on the convention, 48 bucks on the parking, and about 100 bucks on food and a movie of pure convenience. (My SO bought the tickets.) The rest that I spent (172 bucks or so) actually didn't really go to waste but was for either something new and worthwhile or just plain pleasurable. Still, that was a total of close to 450 bucks down the drain for this relatively $/-/1tty convention!

I certainly don't mind spending money on something that I'll find that sucks afterwards if it's at least a new experience that is fair in its pricing or is not that pricey, but the cost of the hotel, parking, and food + movie for convience, was sooo not worth it at all! This was an entirely too expensive risk.

LV Murakami Cherry Blossom Retro bag ~AUD$2.5K (around - can't remember exactly how much) - 'needyless to say it ended my affair with LV for good!
Purchased from US and arrived in Aussie with me having to pay heaps of custom fee (this was when AUD$ was double USD$)

the most impractical bag I have ever spent on - the first time I used it - it rained and left water patches on the untreated cowhide parts..
Took it to my local LV for advise - and instead was insulted by the SA that the bag was fake!

Pursued it further - at the end the Manager and SA contacted me to apologize - and noted what kind of customer I am in their store's record - but it has left bad taste in my mouth so never again..

a super fancy doggie bed my dog never slept in LOL

I was at Petco and they were showcasing their new doggie beds. My baby was turning 3 so I thought I'd treat her with a new bed. I went all out and got the fanciest bed there. My princess never slept in it! I think it scared her. I finally put it on CL free stuff a few months and gave it away. $1100 down the drain.

about $500 for a portable piece of medical equipment which I never use, it's collecting dust and I feel awful every time I look at it!

the second biggest waste was a leather briefcase/tote type of bag I bought for my first "real" job, I don't think it was any kind of brand name (ddn't know anything about bag brands back then) and it cost $350 which was a LOT of money to me as a poor new grad! I used it maybe 5 times and some of the studs/hardware came off too. Maybe that's why to this day I can't bring myself to spend more than $150 on a bag (used to be $25 was my max).............because of the trauma of that first bad bag purchase!

Chinese food restaurant at the Hilton Waikaloa Village Big Island Hawaii - it was nearly $100 and completely awful! I don't care much for it but DH thought it would be good. Next would be Coastal Scents palettes (BE didn't all press easily)

I personally don't waste a lot of money. However, my bf derives great pleasure from buying me materialistic stuff on special occasions. I know some women like this but I'm actually a simplistic person. If it's something I won't use more than a handful of times, I don't want it b/c it ends up being clutter. The only item that I enjoy 100% of the time is a good book to read :)

Some of the stuff that my bf has wasted money on for me: my Wii, games, and all the trinkets that are sold separately $400 bucks (I never play video games); Chloe Paddington bag (it's heavy so I rarely wear it out) $2,000+; pricey stilettos (not a fan of high heels) $600.

Ever since my bf started catching on, he puts the money towards a vacation for us. An awesome vacation can never be a waste of money

Our RV. $22000, used it for about 1 year and it's been sitting the last 4. Can't sell it and still owe 10K. Hope it just burns to the ground or something.

My ATV. $7000 and I used it for 3 months. Was able to get back about 50% of my money on it.

Man....I could go on and on and on. Lots of stupid financial decisions!

anyway back on topic, the worst thing i have done with my money is take friends out to dinner. most times it was many times what i planned on and rarely did i feel they appreciated the cost of the meal, not to mention the short duration of such a "gift". it is something i never "give" my friends anymore and am happier for it.

Wow, I could never imagine wasting $$$ on a boat or car or any of that kind of "second most expensive thing in your life next to your house" type of thing. I will say that my over 30K associate's degree has not been put into use yet, and it has been almost 3 years since I got it. I hope that once I get my bachelor's (which I plan for free through an employer), the associate's will be of major help by either being transferred as credit for the bachelor's or get my next job.

My biggest waste of money has been jewelry. I used to only have a few stellar pieces that I wore all of the time. I got bit by the "inexpensive fashion gold/sterling bug" and spent a lot of money of things that I wore for a bit and got tired of quickly.
When gold went insane, I sold a lot of it and am back to my few pieces. I have learned my lesson and will save for years to get one piece.
I probably spent 2-3K on jewelry that I didn't absolutely love.
