My DH also hates Suze. I do think she is a bit over the top sometimes, but I am entertained by her show and also learn a lot. Lots of food for thought, even if I don't always agree with her!

I was disappointed in last night's show, it just seemed kind of blah and a little too low key. The theme was weird too - do people really think that interest won't accrue on a student loan if they defer payment? I guess I need to try to put myself back to the way I was thinking in my 20s, but I can't do it. It was just too long ago. At any rate, I do agree with Suze that these students need a break on their interest accrual in this job market. But on the opposite side of the coin, what other type loans give people breaks if they're out of work, have medical issues, or whatever. Why should a student loan be treated any differently? Guess I could argue either side of that debate.

I was a little put off with one of Suze's remarks last night. When a caller asked her how she was, she replied something like "I'm just fine because I can afford ANYTHING I want". That was an insensitive statement to make considering the context of her show and this economy. I hope Suze doesn't morph in to a swollen-headed braggard!

Another one here who catches Suze on occasion and am a bit entertained by it. I did see the show with the lady who had 230K debt and no way out. A totally unrealistic show I thought. I personally think that the Suze show is more for people who already have the high incomes and most featured are in the top 10 percent in the USA of those who live better than most of the world can only dream of living. We live in a rural area in New England that has been hit hard by job losses and our family lost our retirement a few years ago so we probably fit with other 90 percent of the world that is not ever gonna be featured on the Suze show. I don't have benefits at my job and DH is working his butt off trying to keep his business going. Haven't seen the Dave Ramesy show myself, but I do think he probably appeals more to the masses than Suze. Oh yeah...DH doesn't like Suze either...feels the show is a complete waste of time and doesn't apply to our lives...

Here's a link to a transcript of the webcast she did on the Oprah show.

It was interesting reading - I didn't get to see the webcast (I believe you can also watch it on oprah.com but I'd rather read it.)

Thank you so much for posting that, Florasun! That really is good reading. I feel really bad for her having been blasted so nastily by restauranteurs. Her advice is apt. If you don't have any money you should not be eating out every night. That's just common sense.

When she first said that it did bother me until later on when she said how she was a waitress until she was 30 and had all sorts of CC debt... I think she's allowed to be a bit braggy.

She has worked hard to get the kind of income she does today and has suffered through the stress that a lot of her callers go through. I sort of think she says those things to prove a point - if she could get out of debt and to the point where she can buy anything she wants, pretty much everyone else can too. Probably not to the same extent but you can at least get out of debt and build a healthy savings account and live comfortably.

Wow, I agree with you totally. I thought the show in general was a bit dull and I agree that it was totally obnoxious to say that in this day and age, she can afford anything she want. I have noticed more of that type of behavior from her lately. She announced how much she made last year and expects to make this year on 20/20. I just don't see the point. I think it's great that she came from nothing but I still don't think that justifies the bragging.

Ugh! I hate the way she calls people 'my dear', it sounds so condescending I can actually see why men would be annoyed with her.

Interesting reading though.

Linda, I find that I giggle to myself every time Suze says something like, 'my dear' or 'boyfriend/girlfriend' and the reason is that it instantly reminds me of the SNL spoofs of her, because she is almost as over the top as the spoofs are! So it kinda makes me laugh instead. If you haven't seen 'em you should look online...they are hilarious.

I have to say that Suze kinda freaked me out with this show. As some of you know I am now out of cc debt but I still have a $12K student loan. I have opted to just pay the minimum on that for now in lieu of building up an 8 month emergency fund. But this show completely freaked me out! She made me want to run and apply any money I was thinking of saving into my student loans instead! AGH!!! I know my loan is small compared to some, and the interest rate is not that high (less than 5%) but her going on and on about the loans being with you for life and the interest accruing (all things I absolutely already knew) really started to get to me. I'm kinda having to talk myself down now to make sure I put something in savings.

I was a little shocked at her 'I can afford anything I want' comment even though I totally feel that she has the right to say it - she's worked her way up and she has been where so many are today in terms of financial trouble. But I still think it came across as kind of brash. I almost sensed that she hadn't planned to say that, but it just popped out before she could stop herself.

ETA: Thanks for the link with the Suze on Oprah XM transcript. It was very interesting to read. I thought Suze handled herself well against the restaurant owner attack.

I've never seen her show but I always enjoy her appearances on Oprah. She takes the no-prisoners, tough-love approach which I think is great.

You have got to see it. If you like her on Oprah, her show is much better, especially the Can I Afford It segment. (my favorite part)

You may be right Damier about who the show appeals to. I haven't been watching Suze's show for that long, but even in those few months it seems she's started veering toward higher income stories/callers. When I first started watching the show it was more of a mix of people from all economic stratas. If they're looking to appeal only to wealthier people, they may find that the show will lose its following. The viewers need to be able to relate to the finances discussed on the show.

Cafire, what I took away from the talk on student loans is that people who postpone them are the ones who are in for a shock at how fast the debt will grow. If you're paying on your loan with a 5% interest rate, then you should be fine.

When my husband and I got married he handed me his student loan payment coupon book and I started making the payments. His original loan was for $10k, and at that point he'd been paying on them for several years. When I ran out of coupons a year or so later I asked him if that was the end of the payments. He got a big laugh out of that naive question - no, there was another one on the way. Shortly after, we got a statement and he still owed about $7k. I don't remember what the interest rate was, but his loan was taken out when interest rates were generally about twice what they are now. Anyway... it seemed to me the payments had been amortized in some weird way so that the principle was paid down very slowly. So we scraped together all that we could and paid the loan off. However, if I had a loan today at under 5%, I think I'd just pay it off with monthly payments.
