He can still get an AMEX cc, maybe not the blue, but anyway, he can call that number and discuss alternatives for approval one of which is to show documentation proving his salary etc its ok LOTS of people make good money and have no credit history. He got automated denial bc the online approval process looks for a FICO score (he's got no history so that was an automatic fat zero). I don't know how high of an income he's got but a FYI not everyone needs to go the standard Macy's Sears etc. route if they are making high enough solid income (just think of the many Hollywood stars are in the exact same situation with credit history but they get the top AMEX card lol). Good luck!!!!

I know that AmEx does credit reviews on their current customers, requesting tax returns and such - I wonder if they would let him do the same thing to get approved?

Thanks for all the advice ladies. Maybe I can convince him to just call... or else I'll have him apply for a Discover card or something. He has zero patience for this kind of stuff so I'll be lucky if I can even get him to acquire a credit card at all. You gals are so right, though... when he wants to buy a house or needs a loan for whatever, it'd be so much easier for him to have some credit history.

I guess his cell phone doesn't even count as credit history.

Oh well... thanks again, ladies.

it could be much worse, he could have a credit history as long as your arm...with debt and late payments up the wazoo.

honestly, a man without a credit history is a prize...a credit virgin.... not many of those walking around!

I'd say his rejection is due to not having an established credit history.

I think if he doesn't want a hassel later he should start building his credit now. I wonder what his score is? I know that I got a car loan years back and it was a huge pain because I had paid cash for all of my other cars - despite great credit and a history of paying credit cards. As far as I know only student loans and other types of installment loans, like car loans, get reported (in addition to the other stuff). I thought phone companies only reported if you didn't pay, so they act as a minus, but not if you did, as a plus.

Although he doesn't have a credit card, he should pull up his credit report to make sure someone hasn't stolen his identity. Also he could pay a bit extra and get his credit rating.

I don't know how old your SO is but form what I have read and understand it is a lot easier to get a credit card right when you turn 18 and after you get out of college it is way harder to get a card.

LOL... FICO is like the husband in a relationship. When the wife does everything right she gets no credit for it but mess up it once and she will never hear the end of it.

Anyway the reason a lot of the utilities and phone services do not report is because some are
paid ahead of time
some have deposits down (so the util. company is the one who owes you not the other way around)
cancellable by any of the parties at any time (esp. if you do not pay the bill)

Typically they report if they have to send to collections for non-payment.

I'm a doctor with a higher income, a high credit score, an auto loan and a Chase credit card that I have had for five years and always made the payments on, and I was still rejected by AMEX:)

You CAN put one in his name under your account. He will then establish his credit and be adding more points to your account as well.

I know you don't want my friendly advice, but I thought it may be an option for you.

actually amex was my first cc...i applied to other cc and was rejected at the time. for my case, amex was doing some promotion at my school (university)..and i just tried and was approved. i had absolutly no credit history at the time i applied. i guess it had to do w/ my school.

if you want him to have an amex, maybe he could get one that's tied to something else? bank account, or costco? the costco here offers members an amex tied to costco membership and rewards.. maybe that would be easier to get?
