ok, this is going to be me venting. sigh. ugh.

i am a teacher, and have my summers off. bf is an athlete and his off season is the summer as well. he trains during the summer with a trainer about an hour and a half from where we were living. about a month or two before school was over for me, i said, 'ok what are we going to do about our living situation? my lease is up at the end of june and we want to live near your trainer, right?' he said absolutely, that he was already on it.

so. the family of a guy who trains with the same guy offered their place up to my bf. they said, 'its a beautiful, 3 bedroom condo, its going to be great, we will furnish it for you, and don't worry about money, we'll take care of you. no body is living there, and it will be yours for the summer.' they went on to say that the trainer had spoken so highly of my bf that they really wanted to help him out, as they felt they owed the trainer. so my bf said to me, 'ok this is kind of weird, i know the family is pretty loaded, but still, they aren't asking us to pay anything?!' i said i thought that sounded a little weird, and maybe he should call. so he kept calling the house, and whenever he did, the father wasn't home, or the mother just brushed off his questions, and their son (my bf's age) said 'yeah yeah its all set just let us know when you're moving in.'

so a few weeks later, bf's acquaintance calls and says HE'S living in the apartment now, but that its not a big deal, there are two other rooms and we could have the master bedroom. so bf is a little weirded out, like, 'hmm ok now my gf is going to be living with this guy i dont really know...' anyway, we were like ,'whateve,r its free.' so. two days before we're supposed to move our stuff down, the kid from the family calls and says we need to pay 3,000 dollars for TWO MONTHS ONLY (we needed it for three), and that he wants the money up front. this is after months of my bf calling to ask details about when we can move in, what utilities we need to pay, how much for rent, and each time they brushed him off and told him not to worry about it. now, 3,000 for the whole summer would have been fine, but not for two months, and definitely not for having to share a place with a guy we don't really know that well.

so now we are staying with my aunt which is close to his trainer but its still uncomfortable having to cook in a kitchen that's not yours, and not really having your own space.... i'm so frustrated. we've been hunting craigslist forever trying to find a place... but people (understandably) dont want to rent for just three months.... we're going to look at a place today at 4pm... wish me luck!!!!!

Try college and professional school listings, I know that alot of law students rent out their places during the summer when they get a job. Otherwise you're lucky your aunt is willing to have you there!

If it seems too good to be true, it normally is. Why didn't you have a back up plan, just in case?

I don't know the cost of living where you are at, but 3k for 2 mths in the summer, would be a steal here.

I hope you find something soon. Good luck!!

Ugh, I hate unreliable people like that. It's tricky to deal with friends/acquaintances because we may fail to draft formal agreements and deposits because we trust them. I wish you the best! There are a lot of apartments opening up for 3 months and hope you find a great place soon!

So you're not really homeless? You have somewhere to go. The only thing I can tell you is nothing is ever free, I would have shied away from that deal from the beginning.

Sorry to be pessimistic, but I've learned alot of things the hard way.

Wow, that sounds like a very bizarre situation. I would have had my guard up from the first minute -- as they say, there's no free lunch in America.

If you're not in NYC, SF or Chicago, you shouldn't have a problem finding a place. Don't worry too much!

OK, so you are not really homeless....the title had me a bit concerned.

I wouldn't accept free lodging from anybody...with the exception of my parents, too much weirdness...i hope you can find a better situation asap.
