Default Careful Using Your CC Online! Mine Was Stolen!

Attention ladies....please be careful using your credit cards online! Minutes ago, I was leaving my house to go exercise, but I stopped to answer my phone on the way out!! Thank God! The fraud department from the bank called to question some recent charges, and I learned that someone had somehow been able to get my card number and had placed charges on it. This is a card that I don't use often and haven't used since the first of the month. Oddly, they were testing the waters by charging a dollar here and there in the beginning and then later placing larger online orders. One of the charges they made was from Zappos, from whom I have never ordered. I am so glad that I answered my phone, because the bank is closing this account and issuing me another card. What concerns me is that I have placed so many orders since all of these fantastic sales started, and I sometimes use different cards. The card that was stolen has a very high credit limit, so had they not been stopped, they could have done a lot of damage! It amazes me how these crooks can get your information when you have security software on your pc! Anyway,......gotta go, but please BE CAREFUL!!!

So glad you found out. I always use my Citi card with Virtual numbers. These crooks are so creative. It's scary.

Even more inportant.. DON'T USE YOUR CHECK CARD ONLINE!!!

I did.. and the # was stolen. Close to $1000 of porn was ordered and the only way I caught it in time was that the idiot thief stole my email also and a confirm was mailed to it. LOLOLOL! Idiots. Anyhow I was able to stop the payment and lost nothing. The amazing thing was that they tried to use the same (cancelled) number a few months later to buy auto parts.

Now I use nothing but my CC.

Do you remember where you shopped? They may not have proper encryption.

This is yet another reason why I don't own a DEBIT card.

With a credit card you have protection and if hit by a hacker/theif you simply don't pay and are out nothing. :) I have been hit a couple of times and it's basically painless. I simply call my CC company, explain the charges aren't mine, they send a form that takes me less than 5 minutes to fill out and voila' problem solved. With a debit card you'd have to fight to get your money back.

Some sites store your CC longterm and can be hacked; more than likely it was stolen when you were shopping in a B&M store or restaurant. Restaurants are common for thieves because they actually take you card away from you and can easily write down all your information without you being any the wiser.

Another common way for thieves to get your CC is if you always write your CC number on your check when you make a payment. I have NEVER written account numbers on my checks and NEVER (in over 25 years) had a payment misapplied.

Yep, I feel your pain. About 6 years ago I got a Citibank CC. Immediately thereafter I started seeing a charge, it was only about $9.95, so the first month I didn't pay attention. After numerous months went by (I always used the card so there were many transactions on it), I finally thought to myself, what the heck is this charge that is coming up every month? So I called Citibank and it was a monthly charge to a porn site!

No, I never subscribed to this site. Luckily, Citibank believed me and they removed ALL the charges -- and it added up to 7 months' worth. So yes, pay attention to your statements! Someone probably wrote down my CC number even before my card left the factory and was shipped to me.

I never identified where the information was stolen from but I'll bet they did not have proper encryption. Live and learn, eh? Regardless I will never use the check card on line again!

This is one reason why I NEVER buy from small online sites. I will only buy online from places like Amazon. I'm terrified of having my CC number stolen.
