Default Any suggestions to where to file taxes?

My dad always got mine done for me, so this is the first year I am going to get it done on my own.

I see on tv a few diff commercials for places like Jackson Hewitt and H&R Block.

Does anyone have any opinons on where to go and what their incentives may be? ( money same day, but high fee, or lower fee but worth the wait??)

Thanks for any input!

I've always liked a local cpa we use. In the past we did the H&R block thing, but if you establish a relationship with one person and continue to use them year after year I think it's a huge benefit. Try not to get one of those crazy money now loans or whatever they call them. They are a huge ripoff. Just wait a little longer and get all your money. If your dad likes his tax preparer, why not schedule an appointment and stick with the same person?

I've always done mine online for free. The IRS website has a bunch of links to websites.

how complicated are your taxes? If they are anything beyond a simple short-form return, I wouldn't go to H&R Block. They royally screwed up my friend's taxes. Just go to a regular CPA. I use a CPA and it's not too expesnive I've found.

If you have State Farm insurance. There is a link on there website, where you can file for free with Turbo Tax. If your tax returns are not complicated, you might want to try it. I do itemized deductions and had capital gains/losses to report and I have not problem using Turbo Tax

Wow, thanks for the tip. My renter's insurance is through SF, and I was going to use turbotax anyway! I think I will have to start over again ... but probably worth it to save $50!

HEhe, thanks for all of the responses so far!

My dad lives in FL, and I now live in CA.

I think I'm going to research some of the free sites.

My SO gets his done @ this one lawyers office or something...they charge him an extra $50 if he wants it deposited into his bank acct within a week or 2.

I would like to avoid fees!

Taxes can be intimidating but are actually quite easy. I think it's the fear of an audit that sends everyone to professionals.

True. If you don't have a lot of deductions or stock trades, etc., then I would just file them yourself. The only reason we have our cpa do ours is because we have complicated deductions. we actually were audited the only year we tried to do it ourselves and ended up having the cpa fix it for us. But I still would wait and get all the money you're due without paying huge fees to get it sooner with one of those "loans". The irs will direct deposit it in your account if you wish.

oops, just saw this... I use H&R Block.. they have live people you can call for help since its a reputable company that you can even drive to (if theyre in your area) if there are any problems.. its not like its Joe's Tax Hut.. where you would have no clue of finding a human that can help you :)
