Default Any NYC Investment Bankers here?!

To Investment Bankers:

I'm currently a freshman with a guaranteed transfer admission to an Ivy League. I am interested in the banking industry and would like to see whether there are anyone on this forum or know anyone that would be willing to host an externship(shadowing opportunity) during my Spring Break.

Please let me know and I would be happy to send my resume to you.

Thanks!

P.S. For those who are wondering why I'm turning to the purse forum for this, it's because I cannot find a legit forum to do this and since I know how legit purseforum is, I thought to do this even though it'll probably be a long shot. Thanks!

Go and get 20 out of 24 (at least, 22 for safety) in these tests in the URL below and come back later . And answer what is 5 divided by 8 in 5 seconds or add together the sum of 90+91+92....+100 without using a calculator in 15 seconds would also be a bonus!

Numerical Tests: Numerical Reasoning Test Practice

Answer 1 = 1/8 = 0.125 x 5 = 62 and a half cents
Answer 2 = (91+100) + (92+99) + (93+98) + etc... = 191 x 5 = (200 x 5) - (9 x 5) = 955 + 90 = 1045

Actually, I've tried all of them for fun and the 2 and 3 are harder. Got 24/23/24 there is an really annoying trick question on the 2nd one and I spent 3 minutes on it before pressing the wrong guess!

But anyway which field are you interested in going? I may be able to look for you though I cannot guarantee (and you may have to fly to Europe or Asia if you are willing) because I must say you are leaving this awfully late as you should have submitted your application at the same time when your seniors submitted their application for the graduate programme!

Oh and another thing, investment bankers (the traders anyway though for corporate finance this is obviously not true with the common proliferation of 'all-nighters,' LOL) are not busy because of they have work to do, it's is because they are busy going to strip clubs or trying to find a girl in a nightclub to take home by boasting that they are traders!

thanks...actually I'm only in my 1st year of my undergrad career (i'm 18 years old)...i was just asking because in the US, during Spring Break there is this program that you can do to explore career fields. It's called an externship and basically you "shadow" someone in the field (see what they do type of program)...This kind of program is not offered by corporate but on a one-off basis through alumni, personal contact, etc...so I was just trying to see whether there would be anyone who who be willing to let me shadow them for a couple of days.

Do you happen to know anyone in the US? It doesn't have to be NYC. Houston, Dallas, Atlanta, and other cities would be fine also. Thanks so much.

Oh yes, by the way, since I'm only in my first year I wasn't allowed to apply for any of the internships offered at the banks. Not Fair! :-)

Another thing, how do you check for the correct answers on the tests?

I think I know what you mean; extenship = Spring Internship (there is even a Winter one to spend your Christmas at the office!)

I thought that every firm has a Spring Internship that you get to work on some pet projects! I know that JP Morgan, Goldman Sachs, Citigroup and my [former] bank have it and if you look on their websites, most of them imposed a deadline in December.

I still don't know what you want to do, I mean I can get you to do something in Technology and Operations if you want. Though it's nice to know how to make macros, I don't think you would want to learn about C++ scripting or sorting out UUIDs on people's workstations do you?

And sorry that I have to ask this question but this is a hedge (excuse the pun) against myself being shouted upon by the person who would be interviewing you if you turn out useless and I wasted his time! The question is: Can you tell me why do you want to work in the finance industry and particularly why the field you want to get into?

Lastly I don't think you can check which one you got wrong except by taking it again until it comes to 24/24.

P.S. I am praying that you know which field you want to get into because if you tell human resource that you don't mind, they'll throw your application into the bin for the fact that you have not done your research and show your commitment! It is ridiculous I know but that is the way of human resources deal with things and this is one of the less queer ones I would like to complain about human resources!

Hi, I want to be in investment banking department (actually on Goldman's website I took their quiz and they said that I match this well and this is what I wanted to do in the beginning before knowing anything about it).

How many days is this internship? Also, are you sure I am allowed to apply? I checked on Goldman's website and even contacted the recruiter but they said there are no opportunites for first year students like me. I was offered an externship over Spring Break but it is only for 1 day. The ones offered w/ deadlines in December are internships for upperclassmen. I'm not sure about the one in Europe though and I can't really travel to Europe over Spring break either assuming that I have to pay everything myself. I will just be too much:-)

Ooooh but I'm excited now if you can get me something somewhere in US. I know that a lot of my friends are not doing anything their first year in terms of career exploration but I would like to get a head start!

Another thing, since I'm only a freshman, I don't mind doing anything anywhere just as long as I can have some kind of experience at an investment bank so that I have a taste of the work field. In other words, I would like to see how the business operates before I pursue my career further. Again, though, my interest is definitely in investment banking.

Again, thank you so much for doing this for me! I sincerely appreciate your kindness.

I'm just curious though, I heard in investment banking, first year analysts often work from 8am-2am. Is this true?

hi maryjulia. i'm NOT an investment banker, but i do sell software to financial services including many banks. i also have friends in that industry

To be honest, I do not think an internship for a freshman would be typical because usually you will not have enough experience to be considered an asset.

On the flip side, i did have friends my freshman year that did intern at goldman, morgan stanley and a few others. in every case this hook up was based on their parents who either worked there or had a high hook up. although they had internships, they were basically admin assistants as i doubt most companies would allow a freshman to do much more or interfere with people's jobs (sorry).

I'm guessing you are posting here because you don't have a hook up. do you attend an ivy right now? if so, leverage your college friends and see if any of them have parents that work in the front office.

and yes, there is a major weed out phase in the beginning where people work ridiculous hours.

i haven't heard of anyone getting an investment banking extern/internship before they became a junior UNLESS a) your parents hook you up or b) you get lucky and some high powered alum likes you.

i think externs are pretty rare in ibanking. most ppl i know do an internship in another part of the bank instead. (asset mgmt, trading, private wealth...)

take the externship you were offered (especially if it's with a top tier firm) even if it;s only 1 day. in the meanwhile you can try to find other opportunities or just talk to ppl. don't worry, you're only a freshman and you have plenty of time. i'm assuming the banks recruit at your school

and yes, it is very common to work 8am - 2am or even longer. not every night but very common. i can only say thank god for those black cars waiting outside!
