try Internal Revenue Service and the website has a link for all of the companies that are offering free e-file. You have to access the company's website through irs.gov link or you might get charge. The irs started accepting returns on Jan 12.

Free File Home - Your Link to Free Federal Online Filing

that's the link to IRS free file

if the link doesn't work go to irs.gov and search "free file"

File Taxes Online - Do Taxes FREE - File Taxes With TaxACT

The IRS is accepting efiled returns. I filed mine on the 16th and received my refund via direct deposit last Friday. You will need your Adjusted Gross Income (AGI)from your 2005 return to efile.

If you live in California you can efile your F540 on their website Franchise Tax Board Homepage You will need your AGI from your 2005 F540. Usually the web sites that offer free federal efile charge for state filing. Check your state tax department website to see if you can efile directly through them.

Ok, I tryed efiling through turbotax and this is what I got when I got to the last step of electronic filing:

You Cannot E-file YetThe IRS is currently updating their system to accept returns with items affected by the recently passed Tax Relief and Health Care Act of 2006 (for the tuition and fees deduction).
You cannot e-file your return until the first week of February. The IRS will not accept your e-filed return until then.
Come back to TurboTax and e-file your return at that time.
For more information: Go to IRS News Release IR-2006-195.

anyone else get this?

Make sure you delete your info from Turbo Tax.

I have filed four F1040 through that site.

You should be getting this error from TAx cut or Turbo tax...the IRS announced some last minute changes at the end of 2006...and although turbo tax and taxcut have included the updates in their software...the IRS had not updated the software used to RECEIVE efilings from those software programs yet. The first week in Feb is when the IRS is supposed to have its systems updated to accept efilings from tax cut or turbo tax.

efusik- Ok, nevermind. I just used taxact and Got the same message that the irs isnt accepting my refund yet because I have a education deduction. So even though I submitted it through their site, it will be forwarded to the IRS when they are accepting my type of return.

how long did it take for you to have yours approved and then the $$ deposited into your account?

shellbell- thanks for the clarification!

Sorry I didn't realize that was the reason it wasn't going through.

I efiled my federal and state returns on 01/16/2007.

I got my IRS refund on 01/26/2007 and state on 1/24/2007.

If your return gets transmitted by 11 am Feb 1 you will get your refund by Feb 9 if it's by direct deposit and Feb 16 by check (not including mailing timeframe).

If your return gets transmitted by 11 am Feb 8 you will get your refund by Feb 16 if it's by direct deposit and Feb 23 by check (not including mailing timeframe).

If your return gets transmitted by 11 am Feb 15 you will get your refund by Feb 23 if it's by direct deposit and Mar 2 by check (not including mailing timeframe).

If your return gets transmitted by 11 am Feb 22 you will get your refund by Mar 2 if it's by direct deposit and Mar 9 by check (not including mailing timeframe).

I personally dont recommend anyone use taxact.com the website is entirely too slow, dosent load, stops at places, popups which slow you down.
My state wasnt accepted because I didnt get the AGI correct and now I cant even log in to correct it. AVOID THIS SITE AT ALL COSTS.

Call the Franchise Tax Board at (800) 852-5711 Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. until 6 p.m. Be prepared to provide your name, social security number and address. Just ask for your 2005 AGI.

Did you know that you can file your F540 directly on FTB's website Franchise Tax Board Homepage ?

It's free. You should erase your state info and just file it directly through FTB.
