hi, my friend bought me a white coffer miu miu and wants me to pay her for it- it has the lampo zipper, but has 18 knots on the handle not 12. the liner is brown, is it supposed to be grey? the long strap that detaches is 2 pieces of leather sewn together..there is a seam somewhere around the middle, is this right? and there are no tags attatched to the inside liner. are there any other things i can check? thanx.

just to verify- i took the white coffer to holts, and in comparison, you could tell it was fake.the real ones do infact have 12 knots on the handle and the"miu miu" printed on the button is infact supposed to be higher than the button(the writting is 3d and sticks out).the one i had was only lightly printed on(on the key holder).also, even though it seems to be leather if it smells like plastic it's not real. make sure you check these things- so no one tries to scam you!

I'll just post a few hints for authenticity help for those shopping online.
1) Be wary of sellers selling "vintage" Prada. Often, sellers do this because the tags, fonts, etc. are totally wrong (i.e. FAKE) and they think they can convince a buyer it's just vintage. Real "vintage" Prada from the early seasons of the nylon collections, from the early to mid 1990's, still has a very clear, embossed label on the inside that says "PRADA MILANO MADE IN ITALY" with the rounded edges, slightly curved "R", etc. It will also have the little white tab on the inside zipper pocket. Hardware has the same clearly stamped "PRADA" marks, leathers are very high quality, and the nylon and lining have the same feel as the new ones. The only differences will be in the triangles; very old Prada won't even have the triangle (I have a very early nylon bag that has embossing/heatstamping of "Prada" with no triangle). Older Prada will have a triangle with open grommets/attachments at the edges. Newer Prada will have the solid, rounded attachments. 2. I'm not sure when Prada switched from the inside plaque saying "PRADA MILANO MADE IN ITALY" and "PRADA MADE IN ITALY" but it was at least 2001 or before. I have a bag with the open grommet triangle from 2001 and it doesn't have the "MILANO." So, if somebody is selling a "brand new current season" bag with "Milano" on the inside, it's either older than they are saying or it is fake. Likewise, if somebody is selling a "vintage" Prada item with the "PRADA MADE IN ITALY" plaque inside, it probably isn't really vintage. 3. As on the zipper thread in this forum, Prada uses and has used YKK zippers for a long time. My aforementioned old vintage Prada bag from the early 1990's has YKK zippers. Some recent Prada bags have zippers with no markings at all. But, traditionally, RIRI, Lampo, and IPI have been used, along with Opti from time to time. 4. Place of manufacture. Prada sport and Luna Rossa have begun making some items in China and marking them as such. Many of the "Made in Italy" bags are also largely made in China (shadily conforming to a law that says that as long as some small percent of the work is done in Italy, you can mark it "Made in Italy"), but just because it says "made in China" doesn't mean it is fake. I have a Luna Rossa duffle with Lampo zippers and the ballistic nylon that is Made in China. It also has the small paper/fabric white tab on the inside pocket with a three digit number. In short, I think that as Prada outsources many of its products outside Italy, it will begin to get harder and harder to distinguish. The fakes are getting better and Prada isn't as consistent with its bags and the markings/hardware as they used to be. SO, good luck! |

I'm seeing many auctions on eBay which include an authenticity card and dustbag, but I'm sure it's even easier to replicate the authenticity card than the bag, so I wouldn't even necessarily trust a seller just because an authenticity card is pictured.
One big indicator is whether or not the info on the card is correct - model number, material, and color. I found a list of the materials that Prada uses online, but don't know if it's accurate: Bufalo = Buffalo Leather Canapa = Canvas Cinghiale = Wild Boar Skin Coccodrillo = Crocodile Daino = Deer Skin Feltro = Felt (usually made of wool) Lucertola = Lizard Nappa = Full Grain Leather Pelliccia = Fur Raso = Satin Saffiano = Textured Leather Scamosciato = Suede Spazzolato = Polished Leather Struzzo = Ostrich Tessuto = Woven Microfiber Vela Sport = Nylon Vernice = Patent Leather Vitello = Calf Leather My question is, I notice a spot on the cards where people write in where they bought the purse and when. Do the SA's usually do that when you purchase from a legitimate source? Are there cases where that doesn't get filled out? Say, if one bought it from NM or Saks or BlueFly, for example? |
