as for shopping -- there's TONS of it in Chicago.
Of course, there's the Magnificent Mile (Michigan Avenue), where you'll find Nordstroms, Saks and Nieman Marcus, not to mention Louis Vuitton, Chanel, Kenneth Cole, Feragamo, and so much more!! The Shops at the North Bridge is a "mall" type of shopping center -- that's where Nordstroms is. Bloomingdales is in the 900 North Michigan Shopping center and that's where a lot of the upscale shops are located. Then there's Oak Street (our "Rodeo Drive!) where you'll find Prada, Hermes, Jimmy Choo, Jil Saunder, and of course Barneys -- which is a brand new store (I haven't even been there yet since they reopened in their new location!)

Unfortunately, the MJ store (which is going to be right across the street from Barneys) won't be open til next winter (hopefully!), but there's the MbyMJ store in Bucktown on North Damen -- if you need directions on how to get there I can help you out (there's also lots of great shopping in Bucktown as well -- that's where Scoop NY, American Apparel, and Intermix are.

If you want "discount" shopping, State Street is the place to go -- there's Lohman's Nordstroms Rack, Filene's Basement & TJ Maxx (they're in the same building - ones upstairs, the other downstairs), H&M, Forever 21, Urban Outfitters and Old Navy within 3 blocks of one another (Macy's is in there too)

I know -- there are SOOoooo many going off around here. More than in previous yrs. I swear, some of them sound like they're going to land right on my house! I'm just waiting for someone to get hurt or a fire to start (there was one last night started by illegal fireworks not far from here -- the whole house GONE!)

Me neither. I'm also not too keen on property damage. My parent's house caught on fire a few years ago when someone's bottle rocket landed into their bushes so I'm especially sensitive this time of year.

Happy 4th everyone! I just got back from seeing the fireworks at my friend's gorgeous penthouse right next to the Empire State Building and near Koreatown. It was beyond amazing.

We have much more than previous years too. I'm betting it's because people feel more comfortable lighting them off due all the rain we've had in the last month or so. It's still killing me though!

Anyone know if Barney's done its round of 2nd markdowns?
If not, around when do you think they'll hit?
Im eyeing something. Nordie's has 1, 1!! left in the entire company and its on hold for me...want to make sure its in good condition first and not been too manhandled lol
Just wondering if I would be better off ordering from Barneys...

I thought they did do 2nd markdowns already
some things didn't get marked down in the 1st place,
while I think some other things got marked down the 1st time
when they marked the other stuff down a 2nd time

a lot of memphis bags didn't get marked down at all
(only certain colors, like brown and blue)

what is is you're hoping to score??

So did everyone make it through unscathed? Yikes! Those fire stories terrify me. We had tons of rain the night of the 3rd so I wasn't as worried as in past years, and honestly the noise wasn't as bad as prior years either. But it still kills me that all this is illegal, yet so many parents are basically teaching their kiddos it's okay to break the law as long as you're having fun. Maybe I'm uptight, but I just don't get it. Okay, no more ranting...

Dawn, so sorry you're hurting, hon! Take it easy and I hope something gives you some relief!

PM, you must be an early bird like me! Maybe its the kids thing. Love to wake up before they do to have a few minutes before the madness starts! We didn't go out at all for the 4th. The DH had to leave/travel, so we just stayed in.

thanks ash! i am still hurting but i took some advil and doused myself with some white vinegar. i hope to have a bit of relief soon. :) i just smell like salad now.

we grew up in the country and my parents did set off the big guns (illegal in PA). they'd buy them during our vacations in north/south carolina. but we (the kids) were neverrrrr allowed to touch them or go near them. we used sparklers and snakes and that was it. :) but when we have kids, i do not think we will be buying the big fireworks. too risky.

when we lived in san antonio, we were outside of the city limits so the big fireworks were legal. omg. it was terrible. our neighborhood looked like a freaking war zone every 4th of july and new year's eve. WAR ZONE.
