yeah, i live in manhattan, so i could see them from the rooftop. they usually set them off over the east river, so that most of brooklyn and queens residents could view them too, but macy's changed the location to the west side over the hudson river to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the henry hudson's voyage. this year new jersey was able to see the fireworks. many people were pissed about that.

First week in August and we're staying with friends outside the city although we are entertaining the option of spending one night at a swanky hotel. The Ritz has an awesome B&B package right now!

Well, let's see --
first of all, definitely check out this website:
http://chicago.metromix.com/

this will give you LOTS of great options and recommendations

Do you like pizza? Chicago is known for its deep dish pizza -- the best, IMO, is Gino's East on Ontario & Wells (http://featuredfoods.com/cgi-local/S...4ginosff728672). The best place for Thin Crust pizza, on the other hand, is Lou Malnatti's (http://www.loumalnatis.com/), altho they also make Deep Dish with the most amazing Butter Crust!!

^^^ thanks! Of course we love pizza! And the general consensus I have heard from most is this Gino's East place is the place to go. I am way excited!

you also have to check out Navy Pier. There's so much to do on the pier -- restaurants, bars, shops and boat rides on both the lake and river. Sea Dog boats are the favorite of our family (http://www.seadogcruises.com/chicago...FREeDQod1B6U_w)

Lalapalooza is going on Aug 7-9th at Grant Park (http://www.lalapalooza.com/) - that's a HUGE music festival that takes place over 3 days. There are usually some really good groups and bands that play there. If you're going to be here during those dates, you might want to check it out and see who's going to be there

DoubleDoor (http://www.doubledoor.com/shows.php) is a pretty big/popular nightclub. Unfortunately, I haven't been on the "club scene" in years, so I'm not sure where the best places are to send you. I would say anywhere on Rush Street would be a good place to start -- I know a lot of people come to Chicago and just walk up and down Rush Street, hitting up the clubs and bars stopping at as many as they can!!

yep, i was pissed. i'm in north brooklyn and usually we have the BEST view of the fireworks. we went up on our friend's rooftop and could see some of the fireworks but mostly manhattan was in the way. however, we had a good view of a big fire in williamsburg - i guess it was an empty lot filled with wood. there was a lot of smoke, it was kind of crazy!

dawn, soooo sorry to read about your sunburn! ouch!

Hi ladies! Happy 4th!!

I am officially going out of my mind listening to all these illegal fireworks. I guess I just don't get the attraction. I mean for the most part nothing you can light off at home comes anywhere close to a professional display.

Thanks for all the info, JJ. We were planning on going to Lollapalooza but decided against it because we all wanted to go on different days and didn't want to waste our entire vacay at a festival. We'll see though! We're definitely going to check out Navy Pier - it sounds so fun!
