I’ve had horrible luck with Smashbox, Tarte, Laura Mercier.. they all made my skin look oilier! I ditched them all several months ago after finding the Mattify! Loose Powder Primer from Mattify Cosmetics. It is A-MAZING!!! You have no idea how much it helps my makeup stay on and my skin stay matte. I use it before my makeup and again afterwards, and don’t need to use blotting papers for about 4 hours. My breakouts have decreased a lot too, because all that nasty oil isn’t sitting on my skin any more. I do a touch up with blot papers and the Mattify Powder at lunch time, and that’s all I need during a whole 8 hour work day. Before this I was seriously using blot papers every half hour. My go-to primer before finding Mattify was **now don’t laugh** milk of magnesia! I discovered later that the reason for its effectiveness is the Magnesium, which soaks up moisture. Once in a while, when I need to stay totally oil free for a really long time, I use the MOM first, and then the Mattify! Powder. Then, oil doesn’t rear its ugly head for about 6 hours. Haha crazy, but it works!

Hope I didn't post this twice on accident! My first post vanished!

Hi, ladies! I need some help! I have super oily skin, and I'm looking for a good primer that will help keep the oil at bay and help my makeup last longer too. I currently use Estee Lauder Double Matte foundation and powder along with a primer, but I still get oil breakthrough during a normal day at work.

I've tried quite a few different primers, and most just don't really get the job done for me. Here are a few of the major/well known ones I've tried:

-Sephora Smoothing/Mattifying primer- works ok, but doesn't seem to combat oil for too long on me. I do like how it makes my skin feel very soft though, and my makeup just glides on when I use this stuff.

-Smashbox PhotoFinish Light- seems to make my pores more noticeable, and isn't too great at controlling oil.

-Sephora Anti-Shine Primer- just recently purchased this one, and WILL be sending it back. It seems to literally "grab" my foundation, and makes it very, very hard to blend evenly.

So what should I try next? It definitely has to be oil-free, because the last thing I need to do is add any extra oil to my face.

Thanks in advance!

My favorite is too faced primed and poreless!

(I think this might have to be in the makeup forum? There might be additional threads there as well!)

I use YSL's Matt Touch- it's oil free and glides on smoothly. But my skin isn't terribly oily, so it might not be as effective for you. Also, it's crazy expensive, lol.

MUFE also has one that people say is good, but I haven't tried it.

Thanks for some new suggestions! I guess I'll start buying these, and see if I can find something that works better for me.

TygerKitty, I wasn't sure which subforum to put this question in. I was going to put it in the other section; guess my first guess was the correct one lol. I did a search, but didn't really find much in reference to oily skin. It sucks being 30 and still having really oily skin!

cheetah_pita, I'm not terribly concerned about price, as long as it works! The Matt Touch is $42 according to the YSL site. The MUFE is $45 on Sephora. I think I'm going to try both of these. My HG primer just HAS to be out there somewhere, or I hope so. I despise having oily skin, even if it does help as far as getting less wrinkles.

I have the same problem as well and have been experimenting with primers. I have used smashbox light which helped a little but still leaves me oily in the afternoon and I know it didnt work for you either. A couple of years ago I used a product from Cargo. I believe it's called blueray mattifying powder. It really worked well. I was thinking of picking some up again. Also I started a thread on setting sprays and we began talking about oil control. Several people recommended Urban Decay De-Slick Mattifying Gel. Next time I go to Sephora Im gonna get a sample. If you find something that works please post!

I have this problem too. I am currently using Chanel T-Mattifier but is still isnt doing the job.
I am sure i have some Mary Kay mattifier somewhere. I will give it another go and update you in a few days! Be intrested if anyone has any good tricks.

I am sure that i just need to get the correct moisturiser. I know that oily skin needs miosture to correct it but it seems so hard to moisturise an oily face KWIM? I feel i want to dry dry dry it out not do the opposite!

I've seen some good reviews on the Urban Decay De-Slick, and through a random Google search found that they have a De-Slick setting spray and the mattifying gel. That might be a good combo for me.

I'll definitely let you know if I find something that I feel truly does the job! My closest Sephora is about 1.5hrs away, but I might need to go there sometime just to grab some samples before committing to a purchase that may or may not work, and then having to deal with sending it back.

I used to sell MK products, and their mattifier was decent for me, but not wonderful. The only time I can actuallly moisturize my face is in the evening after I take my makeup off. If I wear any type of moisturizer under my makeup, it doesn't stay on long at all!

On a sidenote, I do love the MK miracle skincare kit for combo/oily skin; I use it all the time.

I have fought this battle like crazy and I've had pretty good luck with Monistat Chafing Gel. I've tried several high end primers and this seems to do the trick better than anything else.

Plus, it's only about $6 so it's no biggie if it doesn't work out for you!

A lot of the primers contain silica (a form of silicon), and that's not great for oily skin types. I've tried Laura Mercier, Guerlain, and YSL and liked the YSL primer the best. I've also heard good things about MUFE.
