Default WWYD? New handles question
I had a Mr. Clean Eraser disaster (handles weren't as dark or spotty before as they are now). But is it worth $200 for new handles on my Sonatine? Keep in mind the bag was only $600 to begin with. I think they're horrible looking, but I don't know that I want new handles and have to worry about getting a nice patina on them, and having to be so careful. What would you do? HELP!

I honestly don't think they look that bad. But if it really bothers you then replace them

Thanks for replying so quickly. I was going to run today to get them replaced... But maybe I'll wait and not be so impulsive. I just think they look dirty (inside the handle particularly, which is the only place I really used the eraser).

If it helps I think your Sonatine looks pretty... the patina looks sooo warm!!!

I would ask docride in her leather care thread at H forum because I think she would recommend some gentle leather conditioning to even out the patina and avoiding the darker areas. A bonus would be that the leather would not be so dry..

Update: I went to a LV store today and asked the SA's opinion. SHe looked at me like I was crazy. She said that she would tell me if they looked dirty, but she thought it was still pretty and not worth the money. She said it wasn't worth it and the handles look great. I disagree about the great part, but appreciate the opinion of someone who saw them in person, and sees hundreds of bags. So I'm keeping her as is.

She did make a face and scold me when I said I tried to clean them myself. oops!

I'm with the SA, I think the patina looks great! It's definitely darker where its held, but to me it doesn't look dirty at all. I've seen speedy handles that would DIE to look like that! lol

I wouldn't pay to have them replaced, I think it would be a better investment to sell it and buy a new one if it really bothers you. But again, I think the patina looks really good!

Thanks everyone. I couldn't sell her - I love this little bag. I'll get the handles replaced eventually, but I'll try and get a lot more use out of her and dirty them up a bit first. :) So, somewhere way down the road (hopefully not so far down that they don't replace the handles anymore, since this is already d/c!).

All new handles eventually end up looking like that... I love the variations on vachetta patina.. if it bothers you... perhaps you can get a patina on the rest of the handles by frequent use.
