Unless you're purchasing your bags on the LV website, I'd say it's more common to not know the bag name. Those of us on TPF are self-admittedly obsessed with bags, but many people just go into the boutique, see something they like and buy it.

A few weeks ago my daughter and her friend wanted me to drop them off at the local pool. Her friends mom called and asked me could she catch a ride with them to the pool because she doesn't have a car. I said no problem. So on our way there she asked if my Galliera was the bag the girls were talking about. Mine & her daughter mentioned (laughing) how I call my bags by name and give them their own seat in the car, lol! She then says "is this real?" I told her she best believe if I'm carrying it, it's the real deal, I don't f#%k with bootleg bags. If I can't afford it, I'll just buy another brand. She says to me "I don't have a problem with it, I'll buy a fake one" SMH!!! And no she didn't proceed to ask how much I paid for it?! I told her, my husband bought me the bag, as long as he's fine with the amount it cost no one else needs to question the price and I left it at that...UNBELIEVABLE!!!

Obsessed!!
Nobody really approaches me with that question on street. My fb friend, however, commented on my pic (me posing and carrying LV on vacation) balantly "OMG LV!! Is that real??" I responded her saying yes, if it's not authentic then i wouldn't carry it. She never answered back just "liked" my reply. I guess ppl who ask these questions mean no harm, just no manner.

Another story doesn't really about ITR q, but i think it's relateable. my bf's older sister once showed me the link to buy my bag's replica on her phone and told everyone 'look! I can only buy the same thing for only $159' then she giggled. I managed to smile and keep my mouth shut. Later on, i heard she bought a preloved Chanel and went berserk over her sister's comment that it looked like $20 bag. I honestly laughed out loud. Hypocrite everywhere.

LILYLOVELV - I thought your story was hilarious. I had a similar encounter coming to work one day. Two "ladies" and I'm using the term loosely commented that the two LV's I was carrying had to be fake because they had never seen them. When we all proceeded to get into the elevator one of them asked if my bags were real. I then proceeded to tell them that both my cabas alto and audacieuse were indeed real and that I don't do fake bags, boobs or hair. The two latter of which they both had. People really do have NERVES!

I was ****ed not because she said my real LV is fake, it's because I think she should have some respect for ppl in different countries.. So disrespectful. I thought discrimination is not existing anymore but she proved that I was wrong. That's sad. I don't know.. I just think we should have some respects for each others...
Surprised to see some people believe this; I lived in HK for 4 years and the only people I saw with fakes were European and American tourists. People here have a huge respect and fanaticism for designer brands and would be really embarrassed to be seen wearing fakes, especially if they have a white collar job. The only people that asked me the question were all tourists that wanted to buy fakes themselves; my friends would never imagine that I could ever buy fakes.

I first got the ITR question a couple of years ago from my younger cousin. My mother and I were going shopping in NYC and we took my cousin (who lives in NYC) with us. She immediately asked me if my mono Speedy 30 was real to which I replied that yes, it was and my mother just said that we don't buy replicas. I don't think she believed either of us, but that's okay because when we were at the NYC Bloomingdales which has an LV in it, my mother decided to get the large Tivoli. The look on my cousin's face while we were in the LV boutique was priceless.

Being fabulous
Honestly, while it is annoying, I think the majority of people assume that when they see regular people in the street, they are wearing an inauthentic/knock-off LV bag. It ticks me off, but what can I do? I can't whip out my receipt to prove people wrong. Once in the salon a woman asked me where I got my bag from (I was wearing my old Luco tote) I answered, "In the store on 5th avenue." She looked at me stunned, like she did not believe me. Another time, I actually was in an argument over people skipping me in a line, and the girl I was having words with, came out of nowhere and said "You and your fake bag." This cracked me up because I had on my delightful, and it had absolutely nothing to do with what our issue was about. But I guess it was something she noticed about me. That was when it clicked--if she thinks it's fake, I'm sure most people do as well. But, I buy my bags for me, not for my neighbors, so let them all think it's bootleg idgaf!!

I was shopping with my mom, when a woman working at the store said, "I love your bag, is it real?" My mom looked at her at and said, "We don't wear fakes". That was the end of it.

IMO usually people asked ITR because they are envy and can't afford one. My brother's wife have no real designer bag and all my designer bags are real (gucci, chanel, lv, hermes, chloe, and etc), and someday she ever told me that her fake chanel looks similar than the real one. WTF!!! Her fake chanel is a very low grade of the fake bag. Even the super quality fake bag is stil NOT similar with the real one, how come the very low grade fake similar with the real? It kindda irritate me!! If u can't afford the real one then just shut up!! I bought all my real bag from my saving, not like her who has fake bags by my brother's money. Also i know someone who sells fake designer bag, she also said that the super premium quality fake bag has no different with the real one especially LV, bottega veneta, and chanel *sigh*. I just feel pity with that people, if u can't afford the real one just shut up!! Fake is fake no matter what quality, what grade, and in what country is it made. It's still FAKE!!!

I was in dillards this past weekend browsing around when a saleswoman came up and kept staring at my Trevi PM.. she then after a few moments blurted out .. "is it real." I said yes. She then said 600$.. and I said no.. and she said how much was it.. i said 2k and she went silent. Then she made a face and I said I really love handbags and she said she did as well. Then she said she loved vintage bags and I said i did too.. especially vintage lucite bags from the 50's. Shen asked if I had any and i said yes.. then she said "you must be rich.".. At this point I felt incredibly uncomfortable.. then she said "do you live at hom".. btw i'm 33 .. i said no. She then said " i hope you don't blow all of your money on handbags and save some too.".. I felt she was extremely rude by this point... i own my own business and work very hard.. what business is it of hers what i purchase and don't purchase.. oh btw.. she said "u could buy a car for the price of your bag." In my head I lol.. not sure what kinda car i'd have for 2k..

i just smiled.. and politely walked away to look in another department

According to an article in More magazine, September 2012 issue, ( pg 38),
"Counterfeiting costs NYC alone $1 billion yearly in tax revenue. The sale of these goods has also been linked to child labor & terrorism funding."

I just purchased my first LV handbag in SF LV store so I have not been asked.

An interesting twist...
Yesterday, I was out shopping with my Mom. She gleefully suggested to drop by the place commonly known to sell fake LVs, Hermes, Chanel, etc. She wanted to know how *good* the fakes look.
While browsing at an insanely good replica of Speedy 25, the seller said in a hushed reverent tone, "Your Totally is original." My Mom laughed and asked how she knew. The other seller chimed in and said, "The metal ring is thicker, the leather is aging nicely..." Then the seller immediately suggested to buy an imitation for once, just to try the experience. My Mom and I looked at each other and smiled. We politely excused ourselves and left.
