Question Liquid Patent Mahala - cracked surface
hello! has any one of you ladies who own(ed) the LP bags, have any experience with cracking or splitting of the surface? i just acquired a pre-owned bone mahala and it's beautiful. but alas, one of the side panels where it naturally forms a crease inward has 2 or 3 cracks! do you ladies know how to fix these?

i also observed that the surface, in general seems rather delicate compared to other finishes. i'm afraid more splits may show on what seems to be a laminate top layer. any suggestions/feedback would be greatly appreciated. thanks!

I have absolutely no experience with this at all! I know, I'm sooo helpful! I am anxious to start reading some replies though. Come on ladies what is your personal experience with JC LP bags? I love them and have had no negative issues with them.

I only have one LP JC, this one, but there is no cracking or splitting of the surface (yet).

I don't have any on mine either but I do recall last year members complaining about the LP showing scratches.

Thank you for your thoughts ladies. I visited a cobler today and they informed me that little can be done with a patent finish. The top layer is really just a plastic coating over leather and when it cracks, it cannot be repaired. I think I'm going to try to super glue them shut to prevent them from getting longer. It's gonna require very fine and careful detail work. Wish me luck with the handbag "micro-surgery"!

You got the correct information....plastic coating, nothing you can do.

One thing to remember about patent bags and cracking. Do not carry them in below freezing weather. From the car to the house is ok, but don't take them out in the super cold weather. The cold will make the leather temporarily inflexible and you can actually crack it with rough handling.

This is things I did not know about. That is why it is good with tpf. I had my Maddy out for like a 40 min walk in below zero the other week No cracks on it though so maybe will be alright. I will not be taking patent bags out in that kind of weather again.

I didn't know that! Thank you...makes sense. I think of both of my patent bags as "winter bags", too.

Is there nothing you could rub into it? Like dubbin? or wouldn't the laminate absorb it? Just wondered if a sort of moisturiser would help keep it supple

i guess it depends on the laminate used. if it's made of substance that is permeable, it may absorb softening agents; otherwise, jburgh is absolutely right, do protect your beloved LPs from exteme temperatures - cold and hot.
