Oh, sweetie, it's not embarassing! I can see by your reluctance that you're very appreciative of what you have, and you realize you're a very fortunate lady! Don't be embarassed at all. If you have the money and it's what you want, get it! Personally I think a Birkin makes a lot more sense than those crazy half-million dollar cars you see.... and will last a lot longer! Don't feel guilty. No one needs to know the cost-- and since it's H and not covered in logos, you can fly under the radar with it.

Honestly, I think it is great you have a husband that wants you to have nice things and is able to give them to you. My DH would kill to be able to give me the things I want, unfortunately soldiers do not make much money at all - He sees me staring at different bags and colors and admiring everyone's goodies and hurts that he can't give me things so others can share and admire them as well, I think it bothers him a LOT more than it bothers me... I would definitely go for it if your husband is offering, just know there are many husbands just like yours, but without the ability to provide life's luxuries to their darling wives that they cherish more than anything else.

Ok...here is my story, but first I must say...Wow, Aunt Kitty...could we swap lives for just a few hours...please...LOL, you lucky girl you! I also have a certain $$$$ figure in my head that I can't seem to get past when it comes to buying a bag. "If" I had the money, it's doubtful I'd be able to spend it, as actually it would be difficult to justify it in my mind period. I just know I would worry myself to death if I carried a bag worth more than my sons car. Not that it's even a remote possiblity at this time or any time ever as we've also been hit with the "life happens" story in our family. So therefore, I visit the Hermes forum often. I love to admire the latest buys and everybody's collections! I get so much pleasure out of that and it's free, doesn't cost me a cent. I don't have to worry about them either. Losing one or having something happen to one would put me over the edge. I currently own two Hermes scarves and one bottle of Hermes Un Jardin sur le Nil. Would love another scarf one day though. I have my sights on one as it is. All that said now If I had unlimited funds and my family obligations were taken care of I'd have a hard time deciding if I'd like a Blue Jean or Black Togo Birkin 35. (Well, actually I'm very practical so I'd have to get the Black.) Back to real life though, I am lucky, I do have a few LV Speedy's I'm quite fond of and feel extremely fortunate to own! They belong in my crazy life of running to work, volunteering, carting kids and they basically don't require the care a Birkin would. One of the kids spilled a bottle of water in my Dooney Hobo a few months ago and it was...Oh well...it's gonna dry. If that had happened in a Birkin, I would've had to have been hospitalized with an IV drip full of Valium for a week. So I don't close the door completely to ever owning a Birkin Bag, but know it's not a realistic bag for my life right now. Don't know when either as I have kids that span from 11 to 28 so it's not a matter of waiting much longer. I think every day over 40 is a gift and I'm a lot closer to 50 now than when I started to believe that!

You're so sweet, Candace. And you have a super DH. Let me say that when it is time, it will come...When we were starting out, my DH and I basically started with NOTHING. DH promised me Hermes (I think he had in mind, a kelly and a birkin - heh!) and an eye-popping anniversary ring.

We worked hard over the years and now DH is afraid that he has created a "monster". I have always been a bag-addict and when I obsess about something, I can be pretty determined. DH didn't realize that my OCD/behaviour and Hermes were not the best combination.

Like Agent Kitty, I do feel a twinge of guilt for plunking down so much money on a purse, esp one in crocodile. But I figured, I worked so hard for it and as long as no harm is done from my purchasing it (except on my Amex), why not?

We do have to enjoy the fruits of our labors...

AW! I just ran over and hugged him, lol! I kinda know how it feels to be apart for work and stuff...I know it is hard We're about to enter a crappy stretch, where I'll be gone for a month learning new Army skills, and when I come back he leaves 10 days later for 4 months. Luckily we know how the Army works so it's not a shock...it still kind of sucks though. We're just happy that this go round, we get to go to Iraq together No matter what curveballs life throws at us, we always look toward the positive spin - because it's our choice how to react to things that happen and we choose to live with love!

Yay! Hello, everyone!

I'm under 30, have had the same good (but middle class) career for 10 years and just bought a bed and breakfast with my husband. Prior to the bnb, I loved Coach, which made my accessory collection a lot easier to build. With no kids and one of the last low mortgages in the history of California, I was able to buy what I wanted (within reason and never on credit) without thinking too much. Right about the time I bought the bnb, I started gravitating to tpf as a social outlet. I don't know many people here and there's only bars around anyway.

Even when I bought Coach, I never bought the logo products. TPF helped me refine my search for a classic bag. I headed straight for Bottega Veneta and now Hermes. Now that I am ridiculously house poor, I am still trying to be the same person I was 2 years ago, but with much more expensive taste. I have done well to keep things in check, buying myself no H bags but the de tout coeur scarf, the horn scarf ring and the black/gold belt for christmas. As I said in RBB's last thread, I am now stuck on the Early America cashmere shawl. I'm in a similar position as RBB, as I sort of have the money to get it but really need to focus on other things.

My husband just makes things worse. If I like something, he will say I deserve it and should have it. He isn't as practical as I am and just floats though life without much worry. His attitude, while much appreciated, just makes it that much harder for me to say no to things!

Wish list: Early American GM cashmere shawl in taupe; Kelly 32 in graphite (or the new androise sounds amazing!) togo, picotin in potiron and evelyne in chocolate. Unless I'm carrying a clutch, I really prefer shoulder accessibility and practicality, which may mean no Birkin for me. In any case, it is not my preferred bag and I don't see myself ever getting one. More scarves and an agenda or two are def. in my future!

I definitely and 100% agree with that (and everything else you said). Definitely don't feel guilty enjoying what you have worked hard for, ever, and don't let anybody else make you feel guilty either. People have critiqued Jason and I before for using some of our earnings on little luxuries - me on Chanel cosmetics and ensuring I always have a nice manicure, J on different types of fishing gear - but you know what? You can't take it with you when you go. Take care of you and yours, and whatever is left over is up for you to decide on how to use it.

He's majoring in Fisheries and Wildlife and wants to work with endangered fish species...he says he wants to be the one that people call when they want someone who knows how to solve a problem and bring back a species from near extinction Suffice to say I have learned a lot from him about not only biology, but ecology and fish habitats!

Hello everyone! I, too, am in the dreaming-of-owning Hermes bags stage. As if the bags aren't expensive enough to begin with, the yearly price increase makes owning even just one bag quite difficult. It just seems I will never catch up! I would be over the moon to own just one, but the bags on my wishlist are:

1) Kelly 35 retourne, PH, blue jean or thalassa blue togo/clemence
2) Birkin 35, PH, chartreuse togo/clemence
3) HAC 32 or 36 (not quite sure which size will look best on me), PH, not really sure what color/leather

So, I will try to save for a bag. In the meantime, I am happy looking at the eyecandy on tPF

This is a sad, happy and supportive thread! Thanks for starting it RBB! I have 3 hermes bags, I said I would rest and get another later, I now feel I should get one more. It is addictive. I can get one, but if I do, something else - house wise will have to suffer, so I have to practical and wait. Candace, you gave me words of wisdom ages ago and thank you, reading your story and life is uplifting and shows what a brave person you and your husband are. He is also not a HHH, which is good. I am sure everyone here will get their hearts desires.
I am glad this thread started and the tales on here are sad, filled with love and happiness.
