CK-----What else could be said? If the student is having trouble with English, what other remedy would there be except to increase his understanding of English. hrug: [But, I'm not a fan of diversity just for the sake of it, either.] [And, this sort of smacks of the whole entitlement thing-----I would never presume that it was up to the professor to assist me, due to my insufficient knowledge of the language.]

Don't get me wrong, I think it's amazing that someone would move to another country & even attempt to go to college where all the classes are taught in a language that is not their native tongue. I could never do it----I'm not great at learning foreign languages, much less learning other subject matter taught in the foreign language.

I don't know if I'm making any sense anymore, & I'm being talked at non-stop by a freshly minted 6-year-old, so I'm going to stop rambling now & just hope that all of you KWIM.

Morning, Lala! I agree with your comments, but wonder if I'm not being sensitive or supportive enough.

I did respond to the student and told him that his time would be best spent on improving English comprehension. He wants to take the CPA exam, which would require a high level of understanding.

CK---If he wants to take the CPA exam, it would serve him well to focus more on his English. Unless it is offered in a language he understands more.

My Great-Grandparents were immigrants who never fully learned English. That limited them greatly & made their world very small. I'm so glad they immigrated & their lives were fine, in the sense that they lived in a largely German community & farmed, thus not needing great language comprehension. But, how much more could they have done if they would have learned the language, KWIM?

Arrrgh, ck, that does seem like a no-brainer. Got to learn the language better if you wish to be instructed in it. Jeepers.
Poor Ollie. Miss Olive is sort of low to the ground, too, and seems to pick up amazing amounts of mud, grit, and water on walks.

Don't feel too sorry for Miss O! She can develop quite a 'tude about me cleaning her off post-walk. You'd think I was assaulting her, with the looks she gives me as I gently wipe down her legs with a moist paper towel. Evil Mindi!

Jumping in on the English.....I think he should get an english tutor on his own or take an outside class (they offer them everywhere) for english as a second language.

Hope everybody is having a great day!!!

This is what I was going to say! CK, I'm sure your school offers tutoring or additional classes for ESL students. Perhaps steer him in that direction. And if he truly feels that his comprehension is prohibiting him from fully functioning in the class, he may want to withdraw from it instead - depending on your school, a withdrawal is better than an "F". He could always take it again after doing some additional work on his English.

If you don't want to say that to him (understandable, that kind of thing could come and bite you in the booty!), tell him to talk to a school advisor or counsellor for advice.
