Default Dilemma

Ok so I have the most amazing Birkin (30cm gold with GH) and I love her enormously. I really think that the combination is gorgeous and a classic however, I find myself worried that she is going to get stained (it already has one tiny mark that's hardly visible but still and that happened on the first day. I am so stressed when I take her out!

So i was thinking that maybe I should get a black one (possibly 35 for a change with PH). But I probably would have to part with Lady (that's the name of my Birkin)!!!!?????as I can not afford both so close to each other.

I just think that a black one would not get stained and I could really use her everyday without worrying???

But Lady is just so beautiful?

That's lady

Your thoughts please, what should I do????

Sounds like Lady is your first Birkin. Just for that reason she should be a keeper.
Also, as Allan says, this is perhaps the most classic colour combo of Birkins, and you will be able to wear it for years and years with many different colours, with a dressed-up or a relaxed outfit. Especially as size 30 can do work bag and evening bag so easily...
Finally, although I find black Birkins absolutely gorgeous, this is such a generic look and an obvious choice (not to mentioned a copied look by fake producers...) that if I had to choose in order to only own one, this wouldn't be my choice. (this is my personal opinion, please don't shoot me dear tpf'ers who disagree!!)

nice one Madam Bijoux ITA!

you got a classic gold with gold, try to relax a little bit while using Lady

remember that the beauty of H is the reassurance that there is always the "spa" option somewhere down the line when you need it

enjoy this one and save up for the black one, then you will have two classic birkins

btw, congrats!

With 15 years of Hermes bag ownership under my belt, I can look back and say I have done smart things, and dumb things. One dumb thing--letting a gold Birkin go.

Another dumb thing--being afraid of using my bags and being afraid of seeing them change!

Too often I have tended to keep the Birkins in their boxes, as if they were in a shrine. They should really be on your arm! My new mantra is "use it--use it--use it."

You have a beautiful bag. Use it and do not be afraid of the little changes. It was not meant to look like it did the day it came out of the box, and that is part of the charm. Accept the charm of the little "bumps" and enjoy it.

Then, take it to the spa and freshen it up again.

I think you have a gorgeous bag. I have a black one, and the gold is more "alive." Get used to using it and enjoy it deeply.

I agree! Keep Lady and buy another Birkin in black when you have the funds.

I think you have come to the right decision. Swapping something you love for something practical is going to be really difficult! And the bags are so expensive you need to love what you own, not settle for something!

One thought, my workhorse bag was second hand (kaleidoplace) and therefore a bit cheaper and I am less scared of marking it...would this be an idea for your second birkin? Its also made of ardennes which appears to be indestructible!

I have a gold/gold 35 birkin and think you've made the right decision. I have yet to get a black H bag, though I do have one on order right now.

Yes I wouldn't mind a second hand one at all as long as it is authentic of course the problem is all the second hand that I have come across are more expensive than a new one from Hermes or I have been looking in the wrong place? (Let Trade, the snob, Luxury Zurich, Createurs de luxe - I even went to two consignement stores in London)

Any advice on where I might be able to find a cheaper one?

I wouldn't mind even if it had a few marks but I would really like a bag that I can use day in and day out, for work, travel, shopping, maybe even not worrying too much if it gets slightly wet (since I live in London)!

Is it actually possible to get a good deal on a second hand Birkin these days?

Thank you all again, your advice is invaluable.

That's just great advice!
Use it use it use it!!!
For rainy days, carry a trash bin liner in your bag.
If you do want a second hand one, keep checking Sandiaexchange or Kaleidoplace for their auctions.
But USE your gorgeous bag!

To be honest, I think gold ages better than black. If you are afraid to use a gold one, the black will actually show more scuffs, etc than the gold. Stick with the gold. I think a much nicer bag if you can only have one.

perigold, i have to agreee with you. i left my kelly in its box for ever - only using it for special occasions because i was so afraid something would happen to it. i think thats normal at the beginning. as for your dilema - what kind of leather is the gold
