The store can sell to someone else but it becomes an additional inventory for the store to carry and if the item doesn't sell, it would affect the quota for the store.

And it that might spill over to the relationship you have with the SA (she/he may be less likely to do a search for you in future)

My understanding is that once the search is put in, the outcome is either yes or no (not sure if it's possible to terminate, but my take is that it is not nice to do so as the SA has to raised the request). If the search is successful, the store has to take it i.e. the store cannot do a search just to check. It has to take the item if the search is affirmative.
