i found this pretty helpful site where you can type the french word in and click on "speak" and a short sound clip would tell you how it's pronounced (you can choose between a male or female voice too).

Zerodross - what a fabulous site. Thank you for sharing. The PF rocks. There is a thread for how to pronounce words. This HAS to be posted there too.

OOPS! That is this thread. I was so excited over zerodross's link that I just lost my head. It will be so useful for life-long US residents like me who are language challenge.

Just be sure to specify a French speaking voice. The English speakin version of French is hysterical!

Interesting thread. I have not once said a french name the french way and have anyone understand me. Examples, today I said les triples (lay treeple) and I got a confused look from 2 different SA's (maybe since it is an old design). When I say it with an English accent or in English "the trippulz" they semi-understand. This has happened with Yves Saint Laurent aussi (eev sein (yes pronounced like the french word!) lo ranh )

And today at Nordstrom the woman did not understand when I said "do you carry Hermes (air-mez). I had to spell it out...

I speak English as a Brit, and French with a proper french accent. Wonder what's up...

The correct pronunciation is lay tree-plays - there is an accent on the final e

Hello everyone,
am a newbie and have become addicted to this site- it's so informative! I know someone posted this earlier, but I need clarification on one little thing. I was asking a SA in Dublin about the Evelyne. I pronounced it the French way, which she didn't understand, and then pronounced it the English way, which thankfully she did. Not to be a pedant or anything, but who is right? I would have adopted her way, but all the staff pronounce Hermes with an 'h' (sorry, can't do graves).
Thanks for all the info!
