OK, so this is probably a very silly question but the in the link above "Ulysse" sounds like "U-liss", while earlier in this thread someone said that it's "Ooo-li-say" - which is the correct way?

U-liss is the correct pronunciation for the Ulysse.

I cannot tell you why we have to hear the S in Hermes but it is true that most of the S at the end of our words are not pronounced. That is why French is a difficult language and to be knowledgeable about how to write a spoken word, you have to read a lot. It is true.

I am trying to make a video of the words I have read here so that you can hear how we, French, say them. I need to get it done so that I can send it the lady who has given me her email.

I think maybe the S in hermès is pronounced because of it´s origin eg the God, non?

Question on how to pronounce etoupe. I've heard two different pronunciations. Another member posted that it's pronounced "eh-toop" - but I've also heard it pronounced A-two-pay... anyone?

Hi I thought I'd post here on the right spelling of the names, since spelling it wrongly affects the pronounciation of the word.

I get a bit confused on which to pronounce since most of us I assume use the QWERTY keyboard and tend to type is is. I can figure out how to pronounce, my problem is I don't know which word/spelling is the right one. Please help

So is it Retourne or Retourné?

and is it Courchevel or Courcheval?

thanks!

The Hermes family was originally from Germany... maybe that's why. Any native German speakers here?
