AMAZONIA (courtesy of callmelulu)
The material "Amazonia" is a rubber sourced from the hevea tree by the Yawanawas tribe in Brazil (source: Grands Fonds from "Bag Trivia" thread, quoting article from old issue of Vogue). This substance is used to coat linen. Seen usually in combination with leather in handbags. It is waterproof and requires maintenance through occasional treatment with the special towelettes that come with the bag.

Cerf (deer skin)
This leather has been discontinued. Does not hold up well and can't really be reconditioned per Hermes. It is extremely soft. It is not scratch resistent but with moisturizer some accidental marks can be rubbed out. Fingernails can actually cause tiny tears in the grain. The dye seems to be ok - corners are not showing wear. |

RODEO
A veau or calfskin. This is a small grained leather characterized by deep veining. It has a silky finish to it which gives it a soft hand, but the graining makes it scratch resistant. It has a heavenly aroma (too bad this picture isn't scratch and sniff). So far, I've only seen it in small accessories.

VARANUS SALVATOR
The second species of water monitor utilized by Hermes. It is denoted by a =. It has the same properties as Varanus niloticus and requires regular maintenance as it is a fragile skin. It's glossy surface takes well to color and imparts an iridescence. Like, Varanus niloticus, because it is a small hide it's use is limited the small bags and accessories.

VACHE NATURAL
A vache is the hide of a mature cow. This is another of Hermes's classic leathers, showing up in vintage pieces over 50 years old. This leather is untreated and colored with vegetable dyes. It has a smooth finish. Because it is untreated it will darken at the handles from use, can stain readily, and care must be taken when carried in the rain as it is prone to spotting. For these reasons, I do not consider it a leather for the faint-hearted nor is it for the novice leather afficionado, but this leather when maintained properly will age into the most beautiful patina and can last several decades.
