I am white as a ghost and I don't care. I'd rather not have skin cancer.

My mom, dad and sister have all had cancerous things removed from their faces. Out of the 4 of us, guess who never went out in the sun?

No tanning for me. I'm too scared of all the risks and I get burned very easily!

:iiiiiiigh:: I'm one of those people who never learns either...

I've had so many lesions removed, a few that the doc had to go back and get more out, and I continue to tan. Recently though I just haven't had the time, so I've been "hittin' the bottle!" I've noticed that when I would tan in beds, I could go in the highest "level" bed and use 45 tingle lotion and not even get warm. So it's sort of a waste of time for me.

I use Loreal Sublime Glow, Victoria's Secret sunless tanning mousse, Jergens lotion and I just bought some from Bath and Body works today. It looks SO real I have people at work asking me if I've just spent a week at the beach!

Nope, I'm waaaay too vain for that. If I could go back in time, I would smack the crap out of my younger self for using inadequate sunscreen. I live in fear of seeing the sun damage that has resulted (I didn't tan, but am so pale that I burned at least once a year in my younger days).

If the threat of cancer doesn't get you (and jan228's story doesn't scare the heck out of you), get one of those UV photos that shows you all of the sun damage hiding under your skin.

And check this out:

No, no, no, no, no, no and he** to the no for me!! Yes, I used to slather myself in baby oil as a teen and go to tanning salons and wondered sheesh, why do my friends get tan and I just turn into a lobster??

I'm milky white and now proud of it. If anyone out there wants to look tan, just stand next to me. I only hope and pray I didn't do any major damage back when I was younger that will turn cancerous, but I do get my skin checked and swear by sunscreen even on cloudy days. Don't get me wrong, I love the sun and especially love cruising in the Caribbean, but it's spf 45 or higher for me and I have to bathe in it there, LOL!

I am 22 right now.. I have fair skin so I tan somewhat easily.. I will occasionally go tanning in the bed like once/twice a month otherwise I will try to just do more outdoors activities to get tan. I DO NOT recommend getting a tanning bed for your house however. I feel as though if a tanning bed is so accessible you will just use it allt he time and that is a big no no!

Unless it is a spray on tan booth!

I work at a tanning salon and I used to go tanning all the time, but honestly, I'm better off not doing it. I notice a difference in my skin texture and more moles/freckles coming in. I do lay out during the summer and wear tanning oil to get an even better tan, but hey, it's the natural sun and I tan easily so I let that go. But no matter where you tan..moisturize, moisturize, moisturize!

I'll confess.

I tan in a tanning salon for a few months every year during the summer. I am not an outside girl and I work full time in an office so I don't get much natural sunlight. I am currently in tanning mode and I am going once or twice a week. I'll probably stop in a month or two and then I will not tan again until next spring.

Something about tanning that I've noticed time and time again is the improvement in my moods. I get really crabby and am easily agitated and somewhat depressed during the winter. Michigan doesn't get many nice sunny winter days and, even when we do, I am stuck my interior windowless office. As soon as I start tanning in the spring my mood lifts and I feel great! I recently read an article that talked about tanning being addictive in that studies have shown that the brain releases endorphins during tanning. I don't know if it's true but it wouldn't surprise me.

Does skin cancer scare the hell out of me? Absolutely. So does premature aging and nasty leathery skin. Why do I do it then? I guess it's about instant gratification. I look better with a tan and it makes me feel good mentally. I am fortunate to have an olive complexion so my skin does have a natural medium pigment. That also means that I don't burn easily, I tan well and I tan very dark with little effort.

I tan easily so even when I get outside I get tan lines. I use the bed to kind of even it out. Really nice.
Why would someone use sunblock in a tanning bed? You're blocking the very thing you are paying for: UV rays to darken your skin.

i would never go tanning in a tanning bed. i never have and never will. my mother had melanoma when i was younger, and my entire family has very fine skin and hair. my 16 year old sister was even diagnosed with precancerous mole removed last year. i use jergens natural glow lotion to give me a bit of glow, but i don't mind being on the paler spectrum. i think it looks more natural given my blonde hair.

I'm pretty sure she meant SUNSCREEN.

Many people think they are the same, but they aren't. Sunscreen will still allow you to tan, it just provides protection for you from sunburn. The higher the SPF, the more protection you have from getting a nasty burn. Sunblock blocks (duh) from ALL UV rays and you cannot tan with this on. Thanks mom, again.

No tanning for me. I'm very fair, and that's fine with me. I don't want to be one of those people who looks older than they are, because of all the sun damage, and I don't want skin cancer either. I'm perfectly happy being fair, and whenever I am out in the sun I wear my SPF 55.

No tanning for me! I'm very fair and I pretty much can't tan, I just burn.
I refuse to set foot into a tanning salon.
Both my mom & dad have had precancerous skin lesions removed. I'm not chancing it!
