A couple of years ago soy was praised for his health benefits everywhere, but now you often read that it can actually be damaging to your health. I know that heavily processed soy products are not the best choice and even though I've been vegetarian for two years I barely buy soy meat substitute products.

As I'm also lactose intolerant and never like the taste of pure milk, I'm drinking soy milk. I don't drink a lot of it, most days I just put in on my oatmeal in the morning or drink it with coffee or tea.
I eat soy yoghurt everyday too, but apart from soy milk and yoghurt I buy soy bean sprouts and tofu sometimes for asian dishes.

What are your thoughts on soy? If people talk about its disadvantages do they only mean the soy meat substitute products or also bean sprouts, tofu and milk?

I only do soy in moderation, and only non GMO verified.

I would not eat soy that was not organic and non GMO, certainly not in the US where 80% is GMO. I feel very strongly about that.

You can check the soy scorecard here

And is your soy processed with hexane?

If you are consuming a fair bit of it, apart from its estrogen-mimicking properties, you need to know that the GMO/hexane issues can make a healthy alternative to meat not so healthy....unfortunately.

Not all soy is created equal and depending on your age and other diet considerations, well, it may be wise to cut back or monitor your soy intake, we all need to be vigilant on what we eat, now more than ever.

All I know is I tried it for hot flashes in menopause on someone's recommendation and it gave me terrible headaches, so I avoid it. Just a personal intolerance, I guess.

I drink soy milk with my morning protein shakes and I have tofu once of twice a week. I stay away from manufactured soy products like soy "meat" or cheese.

I didn't realize soy was this bad for you until I went to a weight loss doctor and she nearly flipped when I said it's probably 80% of my diet. It's taken a LOT to wean myself off the "chick'n-less" products and spicy black bean burgers.

I just switched my protein to organic dairy whey, from a combo of soy/dairy. My Mom died when I told her what I was taking and explained the health risks for women. I would like to add, since pulling all the soy from my diet, my mood and skin have improved.

My trainer on the other hand, had a cow when I told her how much dairy I have in my diet. However, all my dairy is organic, so it's a lot better hormone wise, than the regular stuff. She also chews sugar-free gum and washes it down with Diet Coke...but thinks milk is bad for you. I'll take an all natural drink over soda any day.

I personally avoid soy as much as I can at this point.

I wasn't aware of the issues with soy, but I also barely consume it, maybe once every two months in a starbucks latte.

To all the soy milk consumers: why not switch to almond or rice milk? I prefer the taste over soy milk as well (and cow milk -- irghs).

Rice milk is good if you aren't concerned about carbs-I've heard a number of times that almond milk is the best milk substitute...unfortunately I'm allergic to almonds!

I have heard that about soy, but I don't consume that much to begin with. I eat some soy products especially when I eat Chinese food, which is why I haven't switched to soy milk.

Any more than a small amount of soy gives me stomach cramps, gas and, um, worse. Almond milk is quite a nice alternative if you are lactose intolerant.

I wasn't aware of all the issues with soy either. Is it the same with plain white packages of tofu used for cooking?

I got a terrible rash from soy, but I really liked the taste so it's a shame. I have heard of the health issues with soy too, so that too contributed to me stopping to consume it. Avoiding it nowadays. Almond milk is a good alternative like someone mentioned before me.

Soy is really, really bad for your health, Unless it is traditional, non-GMO and fermented I don't touch it with a ten foot pole. The only time I eat even a little is when I go to Chipotle. They use soy oil but I can't give up my Chipotle. It is hard for me to eat out these days because if I am exposed to even a little bit of it I get sick.

I generally don't link Dr. Mercola because he comes off as very alarmist but if you read through this page you will get some good info on why soy is bad.

Thank you for posting this. I had no idea. I'm not into soy products but my mom swears by them. I think I should send this to her.

If you get the carnitas at Chipotle, that's the only meat that isn't cooked in soybean oil. It's the only one I will eat there.
