You know, when I go to the OB-GYN, they STILL ask me (at 23 yrs old) if I wear tampons...and when I tell them I do, they sort of shake their heads...I'm guessing because of TSS...but I thought this was no longer much of a threat. Anyway, I'm not 100%, but I have heard that your hymen is not completely closed, and that there is a slight opening that makes it possible for you to still be a "virgin" though I don't feel that you aren't if you accidently break it outside of sexual contact. A lot of young girls break theirs due to sports and accidents. I second that it would be a good idea for you to go and see an OB-GYN w/ your mom. She REALLY needs to give you your space. It's your body and you are a grown woman!

Your body...YOUR choice. As long as you change them regularly you are at minimal risk for anything. I agree with the other posts that this is a very dated stigma that using a tampon means one is no longer a virgin.

I hear you, OP...if I had to wear pads in the summer I would die. And at 22, you need to make your own life choices, hygiene, health and all. Mom needs to back off.
