Antibiotics should start working a few days into their course...if you are not getting better, odds are you should be on a different antibiotic.

You probably will be put on Augmentin, but which is hyped up amoxicillin (amoxicillin is added to an acid that helps keep it from being degraded by bacteria, not added to potassium)
Thank you! Augmentin probably would have worked much better, but unfortunately I'm allergic to amoxicillin. Only me...which is why I'm usually put in the azithromycin.

So is having an ear infection this severe dangerous? My dad said he was concerned that I would get sepsis. I'm hoping the antibiotic will guard against that.

One case like this being treated should be fine. If you had repeated cases that weren't treated then you might have a remote chance of complications. If it doesn't clear, you should make the trek to the ENT even though it's far. They're best versed in these types of infections and what to use. Zithromax doesn;t do squat for me- except a Z-Pak will tear up my stomache. Hope you feel better soon!

Ugh, Zithromax kills my stomach too. I had to take it once just because I was exposed to someone with pertussis...sucks to take an antibiotic when you're not even sick!

^^^ Hmm, your hearing is affected, and he hasn't drained it? I had a middle ear infection too, where there was a ton of fluid in my left ear and I couldn't hear a dang thing. I went to an ENT and he did that thing where he numbed my ear drum, poked a hole, and then drained all the fluid out.

No he didn't...omg that sounds wonderful right about now! My right ear popped and now I can hear a bit...it's going to be awkward tomorrow going to the first day of class and not being able to hear.

Ughh..I hope the Z-pak works for me this time. It seems to be clearing up a bit now...it DOES kill my stomach...blah...

Thank you, jen! I probably will go to the ENT at some point this week if I don't feel better by Wednesday. Thursdays I only have classes until 12:45, so maybe then. Ugh...so you say the z-pak does nothing for you? I hope it works for me, although it's not looking great seeing as though I'm on my second one! My mom told me to take some over the counter Claritin for the drainage in my ears...I did that and I think that's what helped my right ear pop earlier.

Zithromax never did anything for me either...if I were you I would definitely try to get in to the ENT sometime this week. I know a girl whose eardrum burst from an infection that wouldn't go away. But she had the infection for quite a while (weeks and weeks) before that happened, so I would just make sure you try and get in this week if the pain isn't going away.

An ENT might or might not do a myringotomy (small slit in your eardrum to drain the fluid) depending on the situation. Long-standing serous fluid (ie no infection in it that wont drain) can happen as the antibiotic will clear the infection but not necessarily the fluid. Claritin or something like it will help to hopefully clear the fluid out. Your body had to absorb it and sometimes a decongestant and or antihistamine will help.

Thanks! I'm not sure either, they may just tell me to continue to take Claritin. But I think I'm going to make an appt. anyway just to ensure that my ears are not damaged longterm in anyway. EmmaLee's story about that girl's eardrum bursting worried me a bit.

i've had ear infections before and my dr. prescribes me anti-biotics and they go away within 3-5 days. the fluid builds up in your inner ear in the tube that is connected to your nose and throat so i don't see how topical treatments will help? i get ear infections when i have bad colds with bad nasal congestion. possibly go back to your original dr. and have them prescribe you something else. i'm pretty sure anti-biotics is the only way.
