Default Trouble sleeping?

Hi everyone,

Do you have any nightly routines you do to kind of gently end your day and wind down such that you can sleep better?

Thanks so much for any of your input or advice!!

I have trouble sleeping. I honestly don't have any great advice. Even if I'm tired I have trouble going to sleep. Reading helps me though sometimes.

i can fall asleep but I can not STAY asleep- I seem to wake up every 2 hours and stay up between 30-45 min each go around.. I was taking magnesium to help. but recently stopped-I want my body to do this naturally and not depend on chemicals.. or nutrients

i have trouble sleeping too. It's like I'm doing something (for example sitting here lol) and I can hardly keep my eyes open but, when I go to bed my tiredness is absolutely gone! And it takes hours until I can finally fall asleep, no matter how little I slept the night before.
...and as a result I also have trouble waking up lol.

I used to have horrible sleep problems for years, here's how I resolved them:

First I went into a neurologist and he had me start charting my sleep ie: when I laid down, when I fell asleep aprox, when I woke up and when I got out of bed ( if I laid in bed for a while)
Then he had me start taking melatonin and using a light box 15 mins a day in the morning.
He had me pick a time to wake up every day and I have to stick to it, regardless of what time I fall asleep the night before, it was painful for a while because I wasn't sleeping well but with the light box and the forced wake up time my body started to turn around and realize that "hey if I don't fall asleep now, I wont be rested" and now it usually only takes about an hour to fall asleep. Sometimes it does take longer for me to fall asleep and he gave me some sleeping medication to take if it takes me longer then 3 hours to fall asleep so that I wont have a lapse and sleep through my alarm.
I still chart my sleep every day because it helps me stay on track so I don't let myself sleep in and then start staying up late again, then not be able to fall asleep.

I also found that I really need white noise to fall asleep, I can't fall asleep without it. I use the TV tuned to paid programing because that doesn't interest me so it's easy to fall asleep to, but if I'm somewhere that I can't have TV I use a CD with nature sounds(water, birds, crickets, wind etc).

I hope you guys can take something from any of this and use it to help you because I know how hard sleeping issues can be, I suffered from them since I was a child. Took 24 years to get a doctor to take me seriously.

Edit: The sleeping disorder I have is called Free-running circadian rhythm disorder. It's nice to finally have a name for it!

^ thats very informative! :) I have trouble sleeping as well. As i normally take about 3 hours to sleep and there after its hard to wake up! But if im really really tired, i probably take about 30 minutes to sleep! So normally, i try to delude myself that im really tired after i had dinner so once i feel really tired, i go to bed. Lol

With all the distractions we have nowadays, things that require little energy of us, it's not too suprising that a lot of people have trouble sleeping.
I would think that doing things such as exercising or even just running errands would help wear you out to where you could sleep, though certainly this wouldn't work for everyone as there are different reasons for lack of sleep.

I also take melatonin, although it only takes about 20-30 minutes to kick in for me. I love it, b/c it helps me sleep great and no hangover! You can get it at any drugstore, walmart, target, etc...

I have a terrible time falling asleep. Instead of laying in bed for a few hours, I just watch TV until I get a little bit tired. I've taken over the counter sleeping pills a couple of times, but they don't really work and I feel awful in the mornings.

The only way I can fall asleep and stay asleep is by running a fan--my family makes fun of me but I tote that darn thing every where with me

i do that too! i think its the sound that is soothing for me not necessarily the cool air. i've taken 3 different types of sleeping pills. 1 tasted gross, 1 has no taste and as i've said earlier melatonin which is great cuz it tastes minty. takes about 30m-1h to kick in and i find i sleep right through the morning and i don't end up waking up in the middle of the night. i also wake up feeling very well rested. its great. also, its herbal so its not bad for you.

I think I have to try the melatonin. I've looked at the research and it doesn't look like it could hurt me.

My sleeping trouble started a few years ago when I was in law school and living on coffee. I would stay up at night studying, night after night. I only got about 3 hours of sleep/night.

When I was pregnant, I slept wonderfully and after my twins were born, I though I would sleep really well because suddenly sleep seemed like a remote luxury. But, my babies sleep through the night with no problem and I don't! It's beyond frustrating especially when so many new parents are starved for sleep... and here I am unable to even fall asleep... Last night I took a tylenol PM (extra strength) and I still had trouble falling asleep. I did eventually, but woke up feeling groggy and fuzzy-headed.

Gotta try that melatonin...
