I used to have horrible sleep problems for years, here's how I resolved them:
First I went into a neurologist and he had me start charting my sleep ie: when I laid down, when I fell asleep aprox, when I woke up and when I got out of bed ( if I laid in bed for a while)
Then he had me start taking melatonin and using a light box 15 mins a day in the morning.
He had me pick a time to wake up every day and I have to stick to it, regardless of what time I fall asleep the night before, it was painful for a while because I wasn't sleeping well but with the light box and the forced wake up time my body started to turn around and realize that "hey if I don't fall asleep now, I wont be rested" and now it usually only takes about an hour to fall asleep. Sometimes it does take longer for me to fall asleep and he gave me some sleeping medication to take if it takes me longer then 3 hours to fall asleep so that I wont have a lapse and sleep through my alarm.
I still chart my sleep every day because it helps me stay on track so I don't let myself sleep in and then start staying up late again, then not be able to fall asleep.
I also found that I really need white noise to fall asleep, I can't fall asleep without it. I use the TV tuned to paid programing because that doesn't interest me so it's easy to fall asleep to, but if I'm somewhere that I can't have TV I use a CD with nature sounds(water, birds, crickets, wind etc).
I hope you guys can take something from any of this and use it to help you because I know how hard sleeping issues can be, I suffered from them since I was a child. Took 24 years to get a doctor to take me seriously.
Edit: The sleeping disorder I have is called Free-running circadian rhythm disorder. It's nice to finally have a name for it!
