Thank you for the welcome! I was talking with one of my friends who runs and I mentioned my shin splint issue. She said perhaps I was overextending myself and should take it easy. She also said perhaps I am just prone to shin splints I hope not.

My class is in a few weeks so I will wait to see what I learn. I am excited!

I just did 8 minute miles so it was an easier run.

Jwhit- I am not a swimmer so it makes me nervous thinking about all the swimming training I have to do.

Judie- for shin splints I would recommnd icing and rest. You can also spend more time stretching your calves bc that can be helpful.

Haaiiiii everyone!

Did 8kms yesterday and whilst legs felt great (great! omg! lol) unfortunately my stomach didn't and so I ended early. Disappointing as I was keen to cruise past 12kms and see about 15, but I had a little bit of a bacon and egg burger thing for breakfast and it left me feeling rotten. Wasn't even very much, but super grease + me = fail.

Saturday I did two hours on the spin bike, and this morning I only did 2kms in the pool... was really preoccupied about a staff meeting we had this morning and I found I couldn't swim for thinking! Will be spinning again tonight though and will get a decent swim sesh in tomorrow am.

Actually tomorrow is Melbourne Cup Day here, an enormous horse racing festival for which basically the entire nation gets on the piss, and for the first time everrrrrr I have it off work and aren't even on standby at the races! So I've bought a purty dress (and later today will buy a fancy schmancy hat) and will go be all girly-like and shake mah thang, I can't wait! It's supposed to be a running day tomorrow too and I don't want to miss out, so given the races and all that start at around midday I might sneak my run in somewhere after swimming but before then. I can burn off the alcohol and canapes carbs before I go there, hahaha!

Now that I'm doing spin bike as well as the running and swimming I keep getting some crazy ideas about doing a longer triathlon or something. I don't even have a racing bike (and quite frankly the thought of riding on these roads is somewhat terrifying), but it seems more Frankie-friendly than a shorter triathlon as I'm really not a sprinter and in a long race my clumsy transitions would have less effect upon my time. It'd be pretty cool to work my way up and do a half ironman one day, and having a strong swimming background is in my favour. Hmm..

Judie, welcome! "Run Like A Yogi" sounds a great idea, and quite inspiring........ in fact I'm thinking I should start a course myself, "Do Yoga Like A Runner", all uncoordinated poses and stiff movements and "Oh I can't do that one 'cos I'm injured"s!!!!!

Kbnkchbnkchbnkch YES, enjoyable!!!!!!!! Rain is beautiful, I love it, but people so rarely get out in real weather anymore and nobody gets to experience rain. It's just luscious. I used to love going out in thunderstorms too, but due to my inbuilt lightning rod that's no longer such a good idea.

Whaleyyy, hallo!!!! Great to see you too! And OMFG look at your signature, haven't you done well!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You little champion, 1:41, sheesh!

Good luck for the sub-40 10km, that's my goal too, how exciting! Are you doing speedwork and tempo repeats? When is it, when's Thanksgiving, we don't have that one here - it's late November or early December I think? Super excitementoreenoe!

Novalicious! *big squeezy hug* I see you're continuing to disappear, congratulations on your first weight loss goal, 50lbs, my goodness. I'm imagining Glinda the Witch melting away in Wizard of Oz. Only not green. You rock!!!!!

Have you done anymore 5kms? What's next for you?

J-Whit, ahh I must have been given a bum steer, mine's not runner's knee then at all. Well that doesn't sound like much fun either! Glad your sister and friend have dealt with their ITB's, that gives me hope!

Peeg, hallo darling! xxxxxxx

Ohh I love horse races. We have a huge horse race called the Kentucky derby and people get all dressed up and wear beautiul hats. It is so much fun. You should do a longer triathlon thts my goal too. The thanksgiving day race is in a few weeks. I have done barely any speed work. I just go and run and up my speed each week along with my mielage an that has worked for me.

Oooh, I had never seen a house race before but I happened to be in a bar enjoying Happy Hour when Kentucky derby was on this year and I got to see "Mine That Bird" came from nowhere to win the race!! That was one of most exciting things I have ever seen. I am big fun of that horse ever since.

Question. Where can I buy energy gels? I checked nearby grocery stores and couldn't find them.

I get mine from my cycling store. They are called accel gel and are key lime flavored. They are great because they apparently are one of the quickest gels to get into your system and one of the only with protein in it. They also sell them at some sporting goods stores and at the local running shops.

I'm always on the lookout for the best gels. I was using the PowerGels in tangerine b/c they had the most mgs of caffeine... for that last extra boost of energy. But I love the idea of protein, too.

I'll check my local cycling store for these.

THANKS!

I may have missed the beginning of this conversation but my favorite are the Mocha Clif Shots -- a little chocolatey, a little coffe-ish, and yes, they have caffeine in them! I get them in the natural foods mini-store within my local grocery, but my local grocery is Wegmans and it is awesome! If you can't find them locally, try the Clif website -- they have a product locator. That might help!

Thank you, everyone. So caffeine is good? I thought it was bad.

whalenme and ohbytheway, I pray that your injuries are completely healed soon.

Welcome JulieH

FrankieP, you are just the bomb - your runs always astound me especially that time you ran in the rain and there was lightning. *SMH*

Okay - so I hit 20mins today (20:17) YAY!!! But I was going at a 14min/mi - how slow is that??? Anyway, I kept trying to remind myself that slow and steady wins the race.
Mind you I'm coming off a cough/cold thing so I'm cheering myself on for running in spite of that. I actually did 17.5mins on Monday which is when I had the worst of the cold thing.

qcescada, there's nothing wrong with that pace!! The last thing you want to do is make yourself absolutely miserable or injure yourself, b/c then you'll just be upset.

It sounds like you're keeping a log, which is awesome! If nothing else, I use my logs to record more than just time and distance. I didn't feel well, my achilles was aching... whatever. It gives me a history of what is going on in my body.

Keep it up, you're doing awesome!!

Thanks jwhitlock. I am logging my total jog/walk times on sparkpeople and mapmyrun. I love that I can track my gear usage on mapymyrun. Then I come here to just comment on new highs/lows:)

Right now I have a stopwatch that I use but I keep think about getting a polar HRM or the garmin 305 so that I have more detailed logs to download. But then I realise that people have been running for centuries without either of those
(I'm just a tech geek sometimes)
