So last night was our anniversary and we went out to a really nice steakhouse. I preparation, I did an extra-hard, extra-long workout in the morning and ate lightly throughout the day. I had mixed greens with vinegarette on the side and a filet with scalloped potatoes. I ate about 3/4 of the steak (with was probably about 10oz), and a couple of glasses of wine. I had one of those single serving size containers of hagen daas for dessert. Today I wake up and weigh myself and I'm SIX POUNDS heavier than I was yesterday. I want to freaking kill myself. It takes me two months to lose 6 pounds. I know you'll all say it's water and whatever, but this has happened to me before after a special dinner and it always takes me weeks to get back to where I started from.

I went to the gym and worked out and sat in the sauna for half an hour and didn't drink any water. I reweighed myself and I had gained another pound. I haven't eaten, I haven't had anything to drink, I sweated my butt off, and now I'm 7 pounds heavier than I was yesterday morning. I'm actually crying real life tears here. What is the point of doing all this and killing myself for months on end when it's all undone by 7oz of steak, 2 glasses of wine, and a single serving of ice cream???

Hi sweetheart- I really hope this is a figure of speech - I'm a little worried about you! There is no way this is actual weight gain from one meal - 6lbs= 21,000 calories - there is no way your meal added up to that. I think you need to throw the scale away if it is causing you this much grief and keep up your regular diet and exercise program and weigh yourself once a month or try taking measurements instead. I hope everything is okay and you have some supportive friends and family on speed dial - xoxoxo

I actually just use one of those composition notebooks that is bound and has college ruled pages. (ETA: I do put Lululemon stickers on it and/or paste motivational pictures on the inside covers, ie. a fitness model with a great body, etc.) I write the day and date down, then on the left side of the page I write down what time I ate, and what I ate. I make 4 columns on the right for calories, protein, fat, and carbs. At the bottom I total the amounts for each column, and on the last 4 lines of each page I write "Exercise:" and then fill in whatever I did that day. I wish I had my digital camera here - I'd just take a picture of one of the entries. It's pretty basic. But it gets the job done! I take it with me to work and back home. Don't carry it around in my purse. If I were to do that, I might get one of the small, unlined, bound journals you can find at Borders or Barnes and Noble and use that.

JP, re: your steak dinner, I would bet that most of this is due to the salt intake you had at that meal. Even reigning yourself in, when you go out it's impossible not to have a high sodium intake from those restaurant prepared foods. You can try to outsmart your body by doing the sauna thing, not drinking water, but in the end, you just have to keep going with your routine and not look at the scale for a few days. I never, ever(!) weigh myself after a meal out, regardless of how good I was. It's never been good news. So I always give it a few days of eating well, working out, and then facing the scale.

Thanks for the words of encouragement Lori!!

cafire- AMAZING JOB!!!!!

jpgoeth, you didn't gain 6 lbs. It will be okay, and I made a food journal with my levenger notebook bc I'll only write in something if it is pretty.

Awwww - hugs to you.I'm sorry I don't have any answers except that some of us are just cursed with a fantastic gaining ability. I eat very little 90% of the time and then when we go to the city for a few days I will have a nice dinner, ice cream at the movies etc and yes, I can absolutely gain ( and more) what you did in my three days away. And no, it doens't just disappear for me either. All I can suggest is you don't weigh yourself the first week after having a night out etc, this will give you time to lose a little of it and not feel quite so bad. It truley suxs.
Hope you feel better soon.

jp, I know exactly how you feel. Sometimes after a mean or the movies I will have gained 4-5lbs!! It doesn't just fall off for me too. I know that the scale can be misleading but it's still hard to take. Stay strong! xoxoxo

I stayed within my calorie goal today!! I still feel like 1070 is not enough but I did a lot of physical work at work so I got a bit more. :)

jp - , just remember that everyone loses at their own pace. I know it can start stinging when you see everyone losing SO much more than you, but if you just stick with it, I know that you can reach your goal.

vanessa - +1.6 is only a ways away. I know that you will lose it in no time. :)

Today was weigh-in day for me. I gained 1.4 lbs. I'm understandably disappointed. I think this might just be the push I need to clean up my act a bit. I'm so through with this plateau.

jpgoeth -- sorry about that scale surprise, that must have been really frustrating. I just wanted to chime in and mention that not drinking anything isn't going to help -- drinking more water will help flush out whatever it is that is hanging around in your system and temporarily giving you a heavier number on the scale. Don't worry, those 6 pounds did show up out of nowhere, but they will probably disappear just as quickly.

Agreed. I know I sound like I'm preaching, but not drinking water is not the way to try and get your weight back down. That will end up back firing and resulting in more weight gain.

JP - I am sorry that you are having suck a hard time with this. I know how frustrating that can be to see that number getting bigger.

Doing ok today. Went out for breakfast with DH so I will be eating a small supper to make up for the big breakfast. Started my period today so that might be why the scale isn't moving as much as I would like. Plus the Halloween candy of course...

I have been on a mission to get healthy and lose weight, which started in mid-February of this year. Since that time I have lost 93 pounds (see ticker) and have gone from a size 24 to a size 12. I would like to lose somewhere between 17 to 32 more pounds, depending on how things go. The lightest I have been in my adult life was 17 pounds less than I am now (and I found it hard to lose anything more), but I believe my ideal weight is 32 pounds less than I am now.

I have managed to accomplish this weight loss by exercising in some form every single day (even if it's just a walk), and by keeping a food journal that tracks calories, and grams of protein, fat, and carbs. I was consistently losing about 3 pounds a week, though now that there is less to lose, things have slowed down considerably.

Anyway, I wanted to join in the fun!!
That is FANTASTIC!! WOW! Would you mind if I asked what your type food intake was? Congrats on the weight loss! Awesome.

Please don't be down! That cannot be correct. I feel your pain. Please don't be so hard on yourself. Today is another day.

1070 doesn't seem alot but you know what you are doing. Do you find it hard to stick it so few calories? It always amazes me how many calories are in certain foods.
