Default Re: The Lap-Band procedure
Maybe the weight is not coming off fast enough due to a plateau. Please give it more time of eating right and exercising instead of having the lap band procedure.....

Just thought I'd bump this for an update....

He has started the blood work and all of the pre-op stuff!! Yay! He will be getting the surgery some time in April '09! Im so excited for him!

We've waited as long as we could and he just isnt losing the weight. This is a last resort, but it is the right decision for him. This thread helped a lot in the decision, so thank you for the input.

a chick at work had that done. from what i heard she had a few digestive problems like always throwing up. i guess if she overate what she was suppose to it would make you vomit since you have no space in your stomach.

Just an update...

We were planning on getting it done in April, but there were a few bumps in the road (nothing serious, just scheduling complications), but he got it done yesterday (July, 13th) and is feeling great! Of course he has a little bit of discomfort, but nothing serious at all, more like a muscle ache than pain.

He is on thick liquids for 2 weeks then mushy foods (like baby food) for 1 week, then he can go back to regular food.

Thanks everyone for your opinions and advice. We both appreciate it. If anyone has any questions, feel free to post here or PM me!

I missed this thread or I would have replied sooner! I just wanted to say that I know people who have had the lap band (including a family member and a good friend of mine). They both had it done in Greece (where I'm from). The doctor was excellent and very experienced! Both have been successful at losing all or most of the weight and continue to do well. After the initial surgery it takes some getting used too, especially dietarily. You aren't able to eat the way you used to, quantities and portions are much smaller and certain foods may not be tolerated that well. Plus you have to get the band tightened every so often because it does stretch so they fill it with a solution and are able to tighten it as desired. It is reversible but most people do not get it removed unless there are complications. I think that it is a surgery worth doing if you really need it and it is a lot safer then gastric bypass surgery. I wish him the best of luck!

Hey everyone! He had his 7 day checkup on Monday and was down 11lbs. We noticed a tad bit of bleeding from the port incision site, the doctor said it was OK, so we went about our business. The bleeding got worse so we went in again yesterday (wed.), the Dr. said there was a little "pocket" of old blood under the skin so he gently squeezed as much of it as he could out then bandaged it up. He said it would probably still bleed a little and to do the same at home, if it got worse, contact him.

So, other than that, everything is going good. I'll keep you all updated on the bleeding. He's excited to start his mushies (mashed potato's, scrambled eggs, etc) this coming Monday.

I am glad that the procedure went relatively smoothly. I have a friend who had this procedure about two years ago. Her weight loss went very well, and then she became pregnant (although she had been warned not to become pregnant so soon). She was very worried about taking in enough calories and the proper nutrition, but with the help of a nutritional counselor she had a very healthy pregnancy. I only tell you that to reduce any fears about "malnutrition". It sounds like your dh had the procedure done by a reputable dr. and has the proper follow-up, so he ought to be just fine and lose weight in a healthful manner. I hope his recovery goes smoothly!

Ok...I don't want to freak you out...but my experience has been such that those that I know that have had this done have not had long-lasting "pleasure" results from this.

I, too, discourage any kind of surgery unless a matter of life or death. I have known two people who have died from this. I have also known a dozen that have done it but ended up gaining all their weight back. And for the rest...they did experience great weight loss but now are either dealing with the "side affects" that have resulted in divorce and other very sad emotional changes.

I know, honey...that this isn't everyone. I do know that...but it scares me so much. DH has also thought about it but after seeing so many suffer...DH has decided against it.

I will only encourage this...PLEASE do your research. There is so much information out there, both negative and positive and just make sure you have it all before you (and him) make the right decision for him! GOOD LUCK!!!
