I think spinning is fantastic and agree it is best done at higher resistance. I don't like and won't follow some instructors that want to go low resistance at unsafe speeds to very fast music.
I love seeing new people join the class starting with a very macho attitude "no, I don't need help with the bike, I know how it works" and they either 1) leave the class early or 2) are nearly in tears by the end of the class. Once you get over the first few sessions of getting your muscles and *ahem* butt accustomed to it, it's fantastic and will definitely help to strengthen the muscles all along your backside and you'll look great if you stick to it!

i know people that in 6 months of spinning they look amazing, ive been thinkin on goin to spinning for an hour every 4 times a week and see what happns, i havent decide yet, i do it cuz i hate aerobics, and the threadmill, i just like the elliptical and the bicycle, so i guess its an option for boring exercises.

Personally I've noticed the bottom half of my body get smaller. I love that my calves did not get bigger. That is from doing it 1-3x a week for 4 months.

Now I've moved onto biking outdoors since I've relocated.

I've been taking a spinning class for two months now and I can see the weigh coming off. My instructor is like a drill sargent but he plays awesome music. I also noticed that now that I stand for the majority of class, my backside doesn't hurt. I am curious - what other workouts do those of you who spin do? I've heard that yoga is great for loosening hip flexors and increasing general flexibility. Any thoughts?

yoga is def THE workout for loosening hips and increasing flexibility. after couple of classes, you can def see slight muscle definition. i havent been going that much because i wanted some cardio is my routine but yogas def good for flexibility.

I had one of those gel seats but it was years ago. I think it was good, I don't remember, it was about 8 or so years ago. I took spinning yesterday after taking some time off (doing other workouts since I couldn't make the times of the spinning classes) and my butt hurts today.

I LOVE spinning, as long as the teacher plays great music. I had a spin teacher who played really lame music and never stayed on the bike for long, she would stand next to the bike. I didn't enjoy the class and stopped taking hers.

I love spinning! I go 2x/ week at my work's gym. I've been going since February. I think a lot of my enjoyment of the classes depends on the instructors. Ours are very upbeat and provide good motivation. It's helped my endurance a lot, and I've noticed more muscle on my legs since I started. I'm definitely interested in getting one of those gel seats, sometimes my tailbone hurts a lot after class.

I said this in another thread a long time ago - When I started spinning several years ago my crotch hurt so much I checked the bike seat to make sure I didn't leave my clitoris on it!! After a week or 2 the whole area calluses over so it won't bother you at all

I was kidding about the actual callus but honestly, I does stop hurting so much some how. I'm quite certain I have camel toe when I get off the bike...I'm typically disheveled and gross.
