Boy do I KNOW what you are talking about!! Although I'm "bigger boned" than most, Im 5'8'', 140, sz.7 Im nowhere near how toned I used to be, even though I've stayed pretty much the same size since h/s. My SO is overweight, and I swear, hes in better shape than I am! I get so out of breath walking up stairs, its not even funny!

So anyway, I'm working out, trying to get into shape for my physical exam for the police dept. To do that, I've been doing Tae Bo(sp?) 3 days a week, for about the past month or so, and I can already see a change in my stomach area. My SO also has a punching bag that I kick and punch(duh, right! lol) 2 days a week for about an hour a day. So, thats my 5 day workout routine as of right now. Since the exam consists of running, push ups, and sit ups(along with other stuff), I will soon start doing push ups and sit ups 3 days a week and running 2 days a week. I really think its going to take me about a year, if not longer to get in good enough shape for the exam

Most women will not get bulky muscle, even with weight training. I agree that yoga is fabulous for toning and for improving flexibility. Although my weight was pretty normal, I was shocked to learn that my body fat percentage was so high, so "skinny" girls can definitely be "fat"! It is always better to be healthy than just thin.

I am totally in this boat! I complain all the time that I feel "round and squishy" even though I am a zero... I do not want my diameter to change. I just want to look toned and not have soft lumps everywhere. My weight never changes based on what I eat (seriously- I can diet and go down a couple pounds or stuff my face with pie and go up a couple but thats about it) but I know my body looks way better when I am active. I am just lazy. I guess now I need to do something instead of just complaining.

I'm in this boat too. My boss always asks me why I work out if I weigh "twelve pounds", and I have to remind him that I got winded walking three blocks to a meeting! I do tone up quite fast though when I put my mind to working out. However, right now I am one fat 108 pound chick.

I'm a skinny fat girl - I wish I have the motivation to work out but I'm horribly lazy. People tell me I don't have to because I'm skinny but I'm not toned at all. I just cover it up with flowy clothes, so people think I'm in shape skinny.

Thanks for bringing this up! I'm in need of a workout as well even though I'm considered relatively thin. But I am tied down by work all the time so it's hard for me to find spare time to exercise on a regular basis. I do wish to be more toned though, that's why I've signed up for the gym and the yoga center around my neighborhood. Wish me luck folks!

Good Luck! Stick with it and let exercise become a new "habit"!

pilates is such a great idea, it really works the core... you know there was a great article on skinny fat about two months ago in fitness, i believe. if it wasn't fitness it was either self or that other one...

I don't know if you can call me "skinny fat" but I definitely have super-skinny arms and relatively thin legs no matter what I do (and I lift weights at least 2-3 times a week) and a curvier torso. It's really weird but I try to eat healthily and exercise to keep it as proportional as possible. My point is that as others have said, you really can't get bulky from lifting weights, especially if you are naturally small/thin, but you will look and feel great!
