Default Skinny-fat

Hi everyone! I've started to post more and more... although I'll admit that I'm sort of a lurker. Hehe hopefully I'll be out of the shell soon!

Anyway.. I have an issue. My mother's side of the family (genetics, gotta love 'em ) tends to deposit excess fat around the middle. Well, lucky for me, I'm also like that. I'm tall and I think average weight, but I have excess fat in the middle that really doesn't look like it belongs on my body, when compared to the other body parts. Is there a way/exercise/eating habits to adopt to get rid of it? It really looks out of place, and with bikini season coming up, I want to look good. The one time I got rid of it was when I pretty much dropped to a dangerously low weight (under 100 pounds) and everyone started urging me to gain weight, because I looked sickly.

I have very healthy eating habits, although I do admit that I probably don't get adequate amounts of protein (I was a vegetarian for a couple of years, and have therefore gotten used to eating fruits and vegetables for meals). What should I do in regards to exercise? I do cardio now (try to aim for 3x a week at least) and usually run for 20-30 minuteS (although I get more time on the weekends). I really don't know what to do because everything else looks fine, just my middle.

Please advise! Thank you so much!

I JUST saw a special on the news last night about the "Flat Belly" diet. I allows for 1600 calories a day broken into 4 meals with Mono-unsaturated fatty acids in each meal. It's worth looking into if that's your target area. Good luck!

I have no tips (because I'm dealing with the same problem) but I also have excess fat in my belly area! Everything else is pretty much fine (I'm also tall and average weight like you with longer than average legs) but no matter what I do I just can't get rid of my belly...lol. I've kind of given up these couple of years because with my family genes I had to lose a good 40 lbs to get where I am today and boy was that HARD!

You can't target any area of your body for fat loss. Doing a certain type of diet won't target the fat loss.

Sometimes genetics screw you. If your cardio/diet is on, there's not much you can do. Typically, there's a certain level of exercise you can get to, then from there, it's all about your diet. What's that like?

I have the same problem but it all goes to my thighs. I plan to have lipo. Unfortunately, if you lose the excess fat in the area you want to lose it in you might get so skinny in other areas you won't be happy.

This has always been my problem too. I don't know why, except maybe I was pre-disposed to extra flab in my belly. I've always been a huge exercise person and I eat healthfully.

unfortunatly, everything Charles has said is true.

Darn it.

My understanding is that the best thing to do is to target your major muscle groups to stimulate fat burning/loss.

I was genetically blessed with toned, firm legs but genetically cursed with a weak upper body that I REALLY have to work at to achieve the kind of firmness I have below the waist. (Yeah, that sounds funny, I know).

I know you can't spot lost fat, but you can build more muscle for a firmer look and feel even if you have a bit of fat covering it.

Doing crunches got me nowhere. Adding weights to my ab exercises and doing lots of compound exercises with weights helped shape my torso a lot. I also do rotational exercises such as the Russian twist with a ball, woodchops with a cable (lower and upper), and twists with a cable. I also work my back, especially lats a lot.

My abs are pretty close to looking ripped. I started doing these exercises about 3 months ago. I tried lots of different things before and nothing worked until I added weights and twists to my ab routine.
