Default Running Shoes...

This has probably been posted before but I don't feel like going through all the posts to find it and since there's no search I'm just going to post my question again!

I've lost a lot of weight and in the past I couldn't run because the impact on my joints was so bad it actually damaged my hips to the point of multiple surgeries. But now with my new healthy weight I can run, without joint pain. My issue is I have large feet that are strangely shaped, I've never found a pair of tennis shoes, walking shoes, running shoes... anything of that "type" of shoe to be comfortable. it always hits weird around my ankles, isn't wide enough or long enough, it rubs my foot raw in certain places. I've spent thousands of dollars on shoes that I've barely worn because they are so utterly uncomfortable that I just can't stand it and I only bought them with the hopes that I could "break them in".

Now that I can run, I really want to... but barefoot is just not an option Any ideas on how to find a shoe that wont hurt? Any other types of shoe that would work for running that isn't the stereotypical running shoe?

I love Ecco running shoes - I wear the RXP3040. Most Ecco shoes also have removable insoles so if you need to put an orthodic in you can do that also.

Is there a running room in Van, Wa? There are several places where they fit people who are runners or looking to work-out. They can tell you what shoe would be your best fit. They have the running room here which is very helpful.

I've had orthodic's made in the past but I've found the part I have a hard time with is the shoe not fitting around my foot properly... causing sores and things like that. I will definitely look into Ecco! Thank you so much!

There doesn't appear to be a running room in Vancouver or Portland, but I just did a quick search of a yellow pages. I'll look harder and see if i can find a place like that, that can fit me like you say. Thank you PinkSuadeSoho!

I think any boutique-type running store will be able to help you. I go to See Jane Run and they are great. Just try to find a place that will take the time to listen to your concerns and help you find a good shoe. A good place will have you walk and run in a variety of shoes (just around the store or parking lot) so they can see how your feet move and how your stride is. They can also show you different lacing techniques to give your shoes a "custom fit"

Also, I have Brooks shoes and I love them.

No problem, good luck. I bought a pair of Mizuno running shoes, love them. Just do what it takes to make your feet happy!

I would try to locate a store that is geared toward runners and see if you can be fitted for a pair of shoes. Try on as many shoes as possible - 20 pairs if you have to, until you find shoes that fit correctly and won't hurt you. Some running shops even have treadmills that you can run on to see if the shoes will work out.

That said, I recently switched from the Asics GT series, which I've been wearing for the last four years, to the Brooks Adrenaline series Though I love Asics, the newer models became heavier and clunkier, and hugged my foot less. I have a practically non-existent arch and need a lot of support, and the Brooks Adrenaline really fits the bill. Love them!

Good luck.

I have to wear pretty substantial orthotics and I also have a wider foot. I find New Balance works best for me. Definitely try a running specific store so that you can try other brands. The SAs there will be more knowledgeable about running shoes than if you go to a big box store of say foot locker.

thank you all for your replies, I'm going to spend today trying to find a running specific store, I've never seen one in Vancouver so I think I'll have to look in Portland to find one. =)

Back in high school, one of my teachers who is also a running coach recommended Asics and New Balance.
