Default Oprah's 21 Day Vegan Detox Diet

After reading about her 21 day detox diet I became interested in doing it as well. I have tried a more severe detox diet but failed after day 3 (it consisted of just eating fruits and barley for 14 days or so).

Has anyone else tried a similar detox diet?? How do you feel afterwards, is it worth it? In the diet Oprah is doing she is not allowed to eat any sugar, caffeine, or alcohol!

Also I am into heavy weight training so I need a lot of protein in my diet to gain some muscle mass.. what good substitutes would there be if I did take on this vegan diet??

All advice is much appreciated!!! TIA!!

Don't forget with a vegan diet you'd have no dairy of any kind

I read a couple of days worth of Oprah's blog and decided that if I had a chef to prepare vegan meals for me, I could do it. I remember something about fruit crepes that made me think "hey, I could do that." And then I realized that I'd have to do all the shopping and cooking myself.

Yeah, I too found this an interesting detox when I first heard it. But, after reading Oprah's blog, it seemed that everyday she mentioned what her "chef" cooked up for her. It'd be helpful if someone had included a non-chef version, if you know what I mean! With a chef making every meal, I think it does help.

As for getting enough protein, I think soy milk (vs dairy) is encouraged and tofu/beans/nuts would also help in providing protein. If you find it's not providing the muscle-building and energy support you need, you maybe could tweak it to what works for you -- whatever that might be. Best of luck!!!!!

Oprah has been on every fad diet imaginable and she always gains back whatever weight she loses. It just proves that diets are worthless. The woman has put her body through hell. She needs to stop it. The whole idea of "detox" is a new age gimmick. Your body isn't a cesspool of toxins as these snake oil salesmen would have you believe. Any wastes your body accumulates leave your body in your urine and feces. The only thing eliminating sugar, caffeine, and alcohol will do is cause you to lose a few pounds of bloat and the case of the jitters that most people live with.

I detox about 2x a year. I get rid of sugars, well refined not fruit, gluten (which makes me very bloated), caffeine (which i'm normally off of) and alcohol. It really is amazing how much better you feel. I can normally keep it up for about 4 months and then get sucked back in b/c of a vacation or something. I have a total addiction to sugar and staying away from the gluten is great for me. I eat gluten free most of the time anyways.

But Oprah goes to extremes everytime I turn on her show.

Oprah slipped up a couple of times, didn't she? I read on her blog that she had alcohol which is supposedly not allowed. Anyway, I think Oprah looks great the way she is now! :)

ITA. I think it's just another fad, just like the "master cleanse" that my co-worker was telling me about. A lot of people use these detox "diets" as CRASH diets to lose a bunch of weight really fast. Yeah, you drop pounds in days, but you'll most likely gain it back right after when you resume your normal diet.

LV Luvr -- would you say during vacation you don't have those sugar cravings anymore?

it totally is a fad diet! However I just found it interesting because I want to get rid of all the cravings I get. Does this diet work for that??

Medical condition my butt - the only problem she has is putting down the fork.

If you take a look at all the fad diets she's tried over the years there's your answer - I don't think it has anything to do with a medical condition personally.

Agree. It is just a way to make more money with cleanse diets/kits. Your body gets rid of toxins on its' own. Maybe it will give your liver a rest but not much else.
