Default Oncologist

Has anyone been to an oncologist? I saw 5 docs last week, and had blood work drawn each time. nowtheywant me to see an oncologist, because my white count is too high.

I haven't told anyone because there is no one in real life to talk to, unless I know this for certain.

I am very scared.

My mother has seen an oncologist, for the same reason you note here.

Generally, when your white blood cell count is too high, it's a sign that your body is fighting something off.

Not to worry, they did many tests on my mom and mysteriously her white blood cell count went back to normal on its own. But it's better to be safe than sorry. Good luck and keep us posted!

meowgal, I've never had to see an oncologist but I can imagine how scared you must be. Hang in there- like lori said, it's better to see the doc as early as possible, and it might not even be cancer!

A few years ago my mom had a breast cancer scare, and I remember my dad and I waiting for her at the oncologist office. Thankfully, the lump turned out to be benign, but it was really scary. I'll pray that everything works out for you, and for peace and comfort.

I know when things are scary, sometimes it's easier not to tell anyone, because speaking about it might make your fears come true or something. But I hope you tell someone close to you, so you don't have to bear this alone- talking to someone in person about your fears might help lessen them! However if you need someone to talk to, feel free to PM me!

I wish you the best. I have less than zero medical knowledge and I know you're frightened, but seeing an oncologist isn't always bad news. Let us know what he or she says.

Hugs and warm wishes to you.

There are quite a few reasons why your WBC count could be high, and some are not cancer. I am very sorry that you are in this situation right now, but in the meantime, try to think positively. There is still a possibility that it's not cancer. Take care of yourself, I will be thinking about you, HUGS

Yes. When they were trying to figure out what was wrong with me (I had rheumatoid arthritis) they sent me to an oncologist. It was a very scary experience, but the office staff was top notch.

Good luck to you--being referred to a specialist does not mean a diagnosis. I'm sure they just want you to be checked out thoroughly by people who do this for a living.
As Sunny07 said, despite your reservations, you might want to tell people around you what you are going through.
As someone who has anxiety, I often bottle things up and then find that when I do tell people what I am going through they are completely helpful and supportive-- and as a result, I start to feel better and less anxious.
In any event, I have you in my thoughts and hope you are feeling better.

^^ I totally agree with you cfred- sometimes it's scary to tell others your fears, but once you get it out and aren't carrying the burden alone, it's so much better! Plus, other people can give you a better perspective that's less frightening.

Many reasons for this, you may be fighting some chronic infection, doesn't have to be cancer. Hope all goes well for you! Think positive, praying for you!
