Default Omega 3 fatty acids anyone?

I had my cholesterol measured (free screening by CVS pharmacy in my locality) and my triglycerides were borderline high. One thing that can help reduce my triglycerides is to increase my intake of omega 3 fatty acids from food.

However, I would like to know if anyone has taken omega 3s from cod liver oil, fish oil or flaxseeds etc (liquid, capsule, ground seeds etc) to reduce their triglycerides? Did it work and how long did it take? Did you make any other lifestyle changes like dietary or take up/increase exercise?

Thank you!

it has to be a lifestyle change...and not merely a quick fix to lower your triglycerides

i didnt want to be dependent on capsules or medications so i increased my intake of salmon, tuna, sardines...i started exercising again and cut down on my fried foods, sweets (the usual culprits)

i also eat a serving of nuts (walnuts, almond, pecan) every other day coz it helps increase your HDL (good cholesterol) and lowers the LDL (bad sterol)

if you want to do the tablet thing, it takes 2-3 months for the effects to show provided you also exercise and cut back on the junk food :)

^ yes my instruction sheet also mentioned exercise, to eat fish like salmon etc, walnuts and green leafy veg. My diet is quite healthy since I'm a sahm and we mainly eat home cooked food and for almost half a year I've been eating ground flaxseed. It's the exercise that I find so hard to fit in. I dislike extreme heat and so now it's only suitable to walk early in the morning or late in the evening, but those times aren't always practical for me.

My LDL was fairly low (which is good) but my HDL wasn't high enough (which is bad). I've ordered some cod liver oil (sounds gross) and I'll be taking that for the next 5 months by which time it will be time for my annual physical so I'll find out how my cholesterol levels are.

I'm actually doing an extensive nutrition program. They say your best bet is to use foods for the linoleic and linolenic acids (omega 6, and 3). It will take a month or so to see your numbers change. Your body needs about 10times as much linoleic <<<<(6) acid as it does linolenic <<<(3) acid to balance eicosanoid effects.
If you have any questions I can help!

My cod liver oil is rich in Omega 3, so what foods are good for Omega 6?

Great for your omega 6 are leafy veggies, seeds, nuts, grains, vegetable oils (corn, cottonseed, safflower, sesame, soybean, sunflower), poultry fat.

They say taking fish oil is not recommended although many claims are made for their power to cure diseases. The FDA does not permit labels to claim that fish oil supplements can prevent or cure diseases. However, it does allow the claim that research is suggestive but inconclusive regarding heart disease.

HTH :)

I guess I already eat some Omega 6, but I'll have to up the nuts--- though the calories in nuts bothers me since I'm trying to lose weight!

Thank you!

Try flax seeds! Spectrum Organics makes a great dry-roasted, lightly salted flax seed that is delicious! Because they are roasted, it eliminates the need to grind them as the husks can be easily be broken by your teeth. I snack on them while watching TV.

I am always a bit leery of fish oil supplements, as toxins in any animal are stored in fat tissue, so I am worried that I may be consuming excess mercury or some other toxins, KWIM?

I've been eating ground flaxseeds for at least 6 months and my triglycerides are still high . So that's why I'm going to take cod liver oil yum yum!
