Default Need some workout advice!

Hi everyone....so I've been battling trying to loose quite a bit of weight I've put on in the past year, and I'd lose some weight, then put it back on. So I headed back to the gym. I've been also watching what I eat.

Here's the question.....do you guys think I will get results from my current routine? I'm not the quite sure what the "norm" is so I wanted to ask you guys. (And I just started this week). I usually briskly walk on the treadmill for about 40-45 mins. and also take my dog for one or two short walks (about a mile both ways I'm thinking...maybe a bit more). Do you think this is enough in order to see healthy results? I feel pretty good! But I'd like to see some results as well!

TIA!!!

If you are working out that much and watching what you eat, you should see some results! A "healthy" weight loss is 1-2 lbs per week. Any more than that and it is unlikely to stay off.

The thing is to not cut down your eating too much, because your body will think you are starving and hold on to everything you eat. I try to have 3 meals and 1-2 snacks per day so my body never thinks it is starving. Also drinking lots of water is important! I usually shoot for 90-100 oz of water a day.

Good luck!

ETA: I'll put in a plug for our "healthy eating support" thread...join us there! It has helped me a lot to be accountable for everything that I eat.

Any kind of exerise is great but IMO if you want to see results I would go with the elliptical. You burn more calories and I am able to get a full workout as long as you do the arms also.

Okay, cool! Thanks! I'll definitely join. I'll try to find it. I have been doing very well with the working out....the key is to keep it up! It would be great to join a support thread. That would probably be good for me!

The best exercise for anyone is whatever they actually do and like doing. Walking is terrific exercise. Stick to it and try to motivate yourself to add more. It really depends on what your goals are.

When I was living abroad in pedestrian friendly cities I walked a lot and that was pretty much the only exercise I needed. I would do some push ups, lunges/squats, and sit ups for strength training.

I just read a study that showed that people who lost weight and kept it off were likely to be walkers. They found a way to integrate exercise into their everyday routines.

LAI - how much weight are you trying to lose? Depending on your body structure and weight, it could either be easy to lose a mere 10 pounds or take yrs. You know what i mean? My friends trying to lose 50 pounds which probably seems ridiculous, but for her weight and size its actually really reasonable.

Sooo if your weight is already normal and you're tryin to just fine tune ur weight loss then you might need to put more effort into your workout to lose that last few pounds. It took me 3 yrs to lose 5-6 pounds i put on in one year...It was a difficult process.

Good luck to you! Let me know if you need any suggestions! The gym is my second home.

I have been at a fitness camp for the last 7 weeks and have seen incredible results on women that did interval training. Mostly on the treadmill. (running at a fast speed for a minute or two, and then taking it to a walk for a minute or two) I personally HATE running so I have been doing interval training on the stair mill, elliptical, or the bike.
After working my ass off (literally) the last weeks, Im convinced that exercise is a lifestyle and whatever you decide to do, ENJOY IT! No exercise is bad exercise. It will all make you a better you! Walking is great! Get your heart rate up and walk girl!! GOOD LUCK! xxx

Cardio is great, but don't forget also that if you start a little strength training with weights (doesn't have to be a lot, even 10 minutes of each workout will help), you'll build some muscle at the same time, which will both tone you as you lose the weight, as well as burn more calories when you do cardio, because muscle burns calories quicker. Just something to think about adding in slowly, every little bit helps!

She's right! If you add 2 days of weight training to your walking schedule, you'll be amazed at the difference! Get someone to help you get started so you learn how to train properly though and avoid injury. I love weight training. Makes you feel great!

i love interval training on the treadmill. i actually made it through a session on wednesday without walking after the warm up. i warmed up, speed walked then alternated jogging and running. i set up my music, cover the screen and switch when the song changes. it feels good. (it's weird for me to say that)

THank you! I'm looking to lose about 35-40 lbs...yeah..... But I'm ready for the challenge. Thank you for your advice! One thing I would like to ask (since I'm not the best at this) is should I be feeling sore the next day? I mean, I know it may be a little silly to ask, but I don't feel sore or anything, so I'm worried I'm not doing enough.
