Default Jeneen's journey to health and fitness...
Hi!

I need to lose some weight that I've been trying to lose for 3 years.

I was all set to join "the biggest loser 2" thread, but I thought it would be too easy for me to hide in the crowd and not be accountable and stick with my program. Over the past year, I've come to know many of you tpfers as daily chat buddies, and I want to enlist you to hold me accountable to my goals and posting my progress in here. I don't have a set goal date. I live a pretty healthy lifestyle, but it could be healthier. I don't have a gung-ho exercise or diet plan, because any time I have done that over the past 3 years, I have stressed myself out too much and changed too much at once and it lead me to burn out and quit after losing only 5 pounds each time.

Here we go!

About me: 5'1", size 4 swiftly approaching 6, 36-33-39, b/n 125 and 130 lbs, late 20s, petite, good muscle tone, curvy.

Short term goals: lose 3-6 inches off my waist, and 2-4 off my hips, get to a comfortable size 4, then eventually back to the 2 I was until 3 years ago - I don't fit into or feel comfortable in 75% of my clothes anymore. Weight isn't as important but if I had to goal it, I would like to get down to 110 lbs... I know losing 15 - 20 pounds may not seem like a lot, but at my height, it is, and it is stubborn weight I can't seem to get rid of.

Long term goals: lower my cholesterol to under 300 (I eat well, but it's genetic), train for and run a 5K, be able to get dressed in the morning without worrying about nothing fitting me, feeling sub-conscious about my mid-section.

Work out plan: IDEAL: 15-20 minutes, HIIT cardio 3 days per week, 15 - 20 minute dog walk 4 days per week, 1 30 minute pilates TV exercise class a week... minimal weight training on upper and lower body - I've read all the research of the benefits; my body responds a little too well to weight training and I DO bulk up. I plan on doing low weight high reps and some circuit training also 3 days a week after I finish my HIIT. I can literally go without working out for months and my body will maintain the muscle tone I have built since I was a child... I literally have 10 pounds of extra weight just sitting on my midsection, but you can still make out my obliques and abs - very strange.

Diet plan: Nothing too specific - I've done the lower carb, I've done the calorie counting. The calorie counting works, it just stresses me out to have to log everything, and add all the ingredients in that I cook with, and then worry that it's not accurate or that I'm not getting enough calories, it made eating out unenjoyable, and then if I missed a day of logging, I'd get very frustrated.

I enjoy cooking in and healthy food and was raised on a Mediterranean diet. So, my diet plan is: take vitamins, drink 8 glasses of water per day, minimal alcohol intake (wine/lower cal beer only - I rarely have liquor drinks and then it is only vodka with fresh juice or soda water), I RARELY drink soda, so that's not a problem, eat breakfast so I'm not famished at lunch, bring lunch and healthy snacks to work so I'm not tempted to run out and get something fast, portion control pasta and pizza (my weaknesses) by supplementing those meals with salads and veggies on the side. I already eat only 4-6 oz of lean meat at a time, and don't regularly eat processed meats. I cannot "give up" any food (except at Lent). Obviously cook in, eat out minimally.

Ok there it is - I'm looking for slow and steady changes so they will stick!

I'll weigh in every Friday, and report my measurements every other Friday.

Wish me luck, and I'm hoping for your support! xoxo

I'm here to cheer for you Jeneen! 15 or 20 pounds is just those 5 pounds you know you can lose 3 or 4 times!

As for your cholesterol, do you take niacin? It has been pretty much a miracle supplement for a few people I know.

Thanks Nooch!

I was worried people would think I was nutty for being a smaller size and still wanting to lose weight. Me and my body are just uncomfortable at this current weight! Also, my dad and uncle both had heart attacks this year... and they are slim, healthy eaters, rare drinkers as well. I have not tried niacin - I will check to see if it is in my daily multi-vitamin and do some research about recommended dosages. I have heard I should start eating a handful of raw almonds daily and that will help lower cholesterol. No doctor wants to put me on Lipitor or other drug because I am too young and you must commit to taking it practically forever (or until another medicine shows up). Thank you for the input.

I just read this and realized it didn't make sense - I combined the thoughts of being self conscious about my midsection, and then sub-consciously trying to hide it/minimize it all day long.

Thanks talexs for joining my cheering section!

If I don't post for awhile - feel free to shout me out and bring me back.

PSSHHHH, I say! Ain't nothing wrong with wanting to fit into the clothes in your closet! (Unless the clothes in your closet are from middle school, which I sincerely doubt!)

I think my MIL takes something like 3000 mg of the niacin - she takes the time release one because the non-time-release was giving her hot flashes. Definitely look into it, her cholesterol was through the roof and she's got it in the perfect range after not-that-long. And she eats pure utter garbage. I know a few other people who take it too, not sure what their dosages are.

LOL - my clothes are definitely not from middle school. They are mostly from the past 4-5 years and good basics that I don't want to give up. Even the clothes I started buying a little bigger when I gained the first 10 lbs are not fitting, so I know it's time to make a change... and not just let myself gain more and more weight every year.

Thanks for the additional niacin info nooch - I'm going to talk to my doctor about it next time I see her.

Today is off to a good start - I'm still pumped from the exercise I did this weekend. This morning I took my dog for a 20 minute walk, ate 1/2 a bagel with smart balance and simply apple juice for breakfast, and then had homemade broth based bean and veggie soup with pastina for lunch. So far so good! No coffee yet today - I don't feel like I need it - I need to drink some water, and I have granola for a snack. Dbf has the day off and is making us pork, veggies, and salad for dinner. May do some more exercise tonight - I'll keep you "posted" I'm lame.

Good luck, Jeneen!!!! I'm in a very similar situation ... I need to lose about 20 pounds, too. It's just so depressing to look at my closet, and all the beautiful clothes I have collected and know almost NONE of it fits me right now.

I would suggest the "Couch to 5K" if you're serious about a 5K. I used it, and now I regularly run 3-4 miles easily (when I actually get out there) ... this is coming from the girl who got bad grades in gym class!

Also, check out some healthy eating books I'm using for "thinspiration." "Naturally Thin" by Bethenny Frankel, and "The Denim Diet" by Kami Gray. Both books focus more on making long-term forever lifestyle changes by being more informed about what we're putting in our mouths, how it can affect your body's chemistry and actually make you more hungry, etc.

My problem is I stopped working out (I moved home after a long super healthy year in Africa) and ate junk and tons of wine for over a year. It's a struggle to change bad habits, and it is HARD!!!!

Hi legaldiva! Thanks for the support

I actually have tried counch to 5k and I really enjoyed it except for the shin splints I got. I also became sick on week 4 and had to stop, but I am thinking about starting it again after a few more weeks of my beginner's work out... don't want to rush into it just yet.

I need to find an indoor/public/safe track to run... or do you think I could accomplish it on the treadmill? Maybe that can become my HIIT.

I took my vitamins last night and had the dinner my bf made - yum! I wasn't great on drinking water yesterday, only had 5 cups. Also had a small glass of after dinner coffee liqour (2 hours after dinner so my body had already started digesting the food) - which I don't drink on the regular - hope that didn't break the calorie bank.

This morning I woke up with a head ache - probably due to not having my morning coffee yesterday (I get BAD withdrawals) , so I'm going to make a small cup now - then I went to the gym and did 20 minutes of HIIT on the elliptical b/c my head couldn't handle the pounding of the treadmill. I've already had 3 glasses of water today - also I ate oatmeal and granola for breakfast - I brought soup again for lunch - and individual sized popcorn for a snack.

Tonight - I think we have more soup planned for dinner - small grilled cheese sandwich - and I'm going to make extra veggies on the side.

I'm reading what I wrote the past two days and I feel like I'm missing fruit (aside from the juice I had yesterday) - so next mission is to add more fruit in...

Janeen I totally feel you, I'm only 5ft tall and 15-20 pounds makes a massive difference. Seriously at 110 pounds I can fit into 0-2, but at 130+ I'm lucky to buy a 10 if not a 12. Even a 5 pound gain means I can't fit into any of my pants

I'm also trying really hard to get back to what I feel is my most "me" size, so good luck to you. It's so much harder at fast but really gets easier when you start to see results and get more used to the exercise. You can do it!!

Good luck on your weight loss journey. I don't think you're crazy being your size and wanting to lose weight. I started dieting 7 months ago. I'm 5'3" and a small frame and weighed 148 lbs and was a size 10-12. I am NOW 121 lbs, size 4-6...and still want to lose 6 more lbs and get to a size 4 in everything. Most people think I'm crazy for wanting to lose anymore, but with my small frame, weighing 115 lbs is in my ideal range.

Anyway, good luck! You can do it. Small changes can make a big difference!
