Default Is there such a thing as too many vitamins?

What would happen if I took one vitamin A, B3, B5, C, D, and K everyday? Would my body go funky or would I be fine? Ive heard and read that its not good take many vitamins each day, but Ive also heard it can be beneficial. This might seem like a silly question, but I would like to know
And what would be the best vitamin to help promote healthy skin, hair, and nails? TIA!

well I took a large dose of biotin for a week and my face broke out in cyst like acne for a while. I had a coworker who ate lots of spinach and carrots everyday. Her hair started falling out. I think it was to much vitamin A. I remember she had a weird skin color and kept going to the soc for like 6 months.

I think a lot of vitamin C and E are okay, but too much Vitamin A can be dangerous...I also knew a girl that took too much and lost a lot of her hair.

I am not a doctor but I know there are some vitamins and minerals that can harm you if you take too many of them. The safest bet would be to consult your doctor about a good vitamin regimine.

I'd only take your recommended daily allowance of vitamins and minerals, there is such a thing as "too much of a good thing".

Just take a multivitamin...they have the RDA for almost all vitamins and minerals.

too much vitamin A can in extreme cases result in toxic symptoms, same with B6, with B3 you shouldnt have issues until your daily intake per day is lower than 2000mg I think. Too much vit C can cause gastrointestinal issues among others, an overdose of K can even cause jaundice.

Basically there are two categories: water-soluble and fat-soluble vitamins.A, D, E and K are stored in the fat tissues for a few days to up to 6 months. They are more likely to become troublesome - if you get too much of a fat-soluble vitamin, it can be stored in your liver and add up and cause health issues as result.

Definitely consult a good doctor to see what intake of supplements is appropriate for you ( depends on your diet a lot ).

I agree with Stacmck, I would only take a multivitamin and try to eat as healthy as possible. I know it is more dangerous to take higher doses of fat soluble vitamins (A, D, K & E) because they are stored rather than flushed out of the system like water soluble vitamins.

I know that vitamin E is good for your nails and skin. I tried taking a multivitamin along with vitamin E because I have horrible nails, but they would make me very nauseous, so try and take them with food, if you do. Also, the long-term effects of taking more than your daily allowance of vitamins has not been proven, so I would be wary of taking them for more than a few months. Just google your daily allowance of vitamins, and it will tell you about each, and if it is easy to overdose on them... which with some it isn't hard.

Also... it is also much harder for the body to absorb the vitamins when they are in pill form, and not from food.

I went to school with a girl that was trying to get a lot of vitamin A, she would eat bags and bags of baby carrots, and NO JOKE, her skin started turning an orange tint.

^Orange skin?! Thats pretty gross. Thanks everyone, youve all be so helpful! After hearing some of the horrific side affects, Im definitely going to ask my doctor.
So if I took just one capsule of vitamin E everyday would that be fine? Or will there also be side affects to that too? I just want healthy skin and the white specks on my nails to go away!

I agree with many of the things posted above.

Vit A comes in two forms retinol & beta carotene. Retional is a little more toxic the Beta-C. Beta C is the one that turns the skin orange so big doses aren't recommended.

Supplementing with vit K also isn't recommended although it is a buzz nutrient right now

Vit E if the doseage increases too quickly can raise blood pressure so again high doses aren't recommended and if you do you should increase slowly

Some B's have side effects but they are water soluable so have to be pretty high to cause problems
