Default Help! Suffering with the flu and throat infection, need advice!!!
Hey guys,

I can hardly type this through the tears and the pain....

I have the flu, and a severe throat infection, and I am DYING. I have 102 fever, and severe pains in my head, eyes, throat, ears, gums, nose, back, shoulders and entire body. I ache everywhere. I have never been in this much pain. I have no idea how I got this sick. I was fine Wed, and then i started sneezing really bad. By Wed night, I was burning up with fever, and the right side of my throat was all swollen up like a golf ball. My right ear and right side of my throat is raw, and feels like someone is stabbing me with a knife. I went to the doctor, and she prescribed Augmentin for me for 10 days. I guess it's a form of penicillin. I have been taking it for 3 days, and I don't feel any better. I have been taking Tylenol cold and flu tablets to ease the pain and lower my fever, along with an additional tylenol severe muscle pain pill, and this pain killer "cocktail" seems to ease my pain a bit, but not much. Nothing is helping me!

Can any of you wonderful ladies please give me any suggestions for this horrific pain I am in? I can't eat, I can't sleep. My head feels like someone is drilling into my skull with a scarp ice pick. I also get sharp, shooting knife pains in my throat and up my nostrils. I literally have pain EVERYWHERE. My fever is still around 100. It usually gets lower during the day, and at night, it shoots back up to 102. My whole body is aching. I can't remember the last time I felt this sick. I can't go another night without sleeping. I am so uncomfortable.

Have any of you guys had this horrible flu/virus that is going around? Any advice on how I can sleep through the night? Nothing I take is easing the pain. I am in tears constantly. Thanks in advance for your help.

Get your ass to a doctor or urgent care clinic and get an antibiotic NOW.

Have someone drive you or take a taxi. Don't mess with fever and infection. It is easily curable, but if you don't get it cured, it can kill you.

Hi Shimmapuff, I am already on antibiotics, as I wrote above, I am on a form on penicillin, called augmentin, 500 mg every 8 hours. My doctor said I have to give the antibiotics time to work, but I just feel so sick every day, I am dying in pain.

Are you sure you don't have mono? If your glands are that swollen and the antibiotics haven't started to help yet, I would say either you have a virus (such as mono) that the antibiotics aren't going to do squat for or you have some other bacterial infection and the augmentin isn't working. My first thought was strep, but penicillin (in this case augmentin) is what is used most often and is quite effective for that. The augmentin should have started to do the trick by now.

I would say maybe it is best to get to a doctor (again) and have them do some bloodwork to rule out mono. And if nothing else, they might be able to do a culture to determine what antibiotic will work better for you........If you have been on the augmentin 3 days, you should be feeling some relief by now. Feel better.

Also, I forgot to add...please make sure you are drinking fluids. I know it is so hard when your throat hurts but part of your headache may be dehydration.

Call your DR ASAP and tell them your symptoms. They should be able to prescribe something to ease the throat pain. The antibiotics should have started working, so a call to the Dr is in order. Hope you feel better.

Is there a clinic near you that you can get to??? Do you have a relative or friend that can stay with you??

YES! OMG I had this TWICE last winter.....believe me, I know exactly how you feel and I know you are crying. I spent the first few days of it curled up in a ball just crying and praying the meds would start working.

When mine wouldn't work and I was seriously desperate, my doc told me to take two at once so it can "kick start" killing everything. They also Rx'd me a decongestant too.

I had Omnicef and Durahist-D. Both worked like magic both times. But I was out of work for a week both times. You will get better, but yes, it is pure hell. Since then, I've been a germ FREAK!

Keep drinking warm chicken broth too..... hope you feel better soon.

But seriously - take 2 antibiotics next time you take them.

THANKS JSH812, what is Omnicef and Durahist-D? I have never heard of them.

I am on Augmentin now, and I hope it's the right antibiotic for me to be on. How long before your throat finally stopped hurting?

My throat is killing me! Like glass in my throat!

I also managed to get two painful, large cold sores under my nose from blowing my nose, the laughs just keep coming! LOL I would laugh if I wasn't crying

Any advice on how to treat the pain in my throat JSH812?

THANKS EMMALEE, tonight makes 48 hours of me actually being on the Augmentin. I am still in horrific pain, so I am gonna see how I feel by tomorrow night, hopefully I will be feeling better by then. I hope I am on the right antibiotic for whatever it is I have. My throat and right ear really hurt when I swallow, like knives. I didn't get tested for Mono, but it's really only my right neck gland that is swollen, and it's swollen BAD. Like a golf ball. I tried the chloraseptic, and it helps a bit, but the pain is still there.

I just wish I could stop the pain so I can sleep. I wish I was feeling even a little bit better, but I don't feel like I am getting better at all......

The flu that is going around this year is really bad, I had it (despite having the flu jab) so I know! Sadly I don't think that antibiotics will help with a virus which is what it is!

The other thing is that your temperature will rise to fight the infection, when you take pain killing meds like paracetamol which lower the temperature the virus will flourish, that is why I try to go cold turkey with colds & flus!

In saying that if you have a really bad infection from the flu (throat or chest) then you do need antibiotics!

Hope you feel better soon!

Thanks BagAngel! I am feeling just a bit better today, I actually slept through the night. But my head is still pounding and my throat is still sore, but I think I am getting better. I guess I will be able to tell by tomorrow. Maybe these antibiotics are finally kicking in, or the virus is running it's course. This has been the week from hell for me.

Omnicef is an antibiotic, and Durahist is a decongestant. Your throat hurts so bad because all the mucus and junk is sliding down your throat, where you are infected so it's just a vicious cycle.

It's a personal hell, I didn't feel better until about Day 4 or Day 5. I was completely miserable....there's really nothing you can do but tough it out. Can you try to take some tylenol pm tonight?

There is a throat spray you can get that has a pain killer in it. It is not prescription. Call your pharmacy, they will help!
