It really did scare me, so I decided to get one done.

It was negative, for the record.

white flowers: Im pretty sure you can get one done at your local Health Dept. I think Planned Parenthood might do it too, but Im not sure.
I got mine done at my Doctors office, he had actually asked me before if I wanted one, but I never felt the need.
You can also get HIV from the dentist! I always tell them to use new and clean tools and if they give me a hard time, I get up and leave....I've already done that at the dental office once. It's my life and my safety that comes 1st.
I never got tested yet, but I have gotten other tests done because I am exposed to convicted criminals. I am always told in advance when they have STD, HIV, AIDS, etc and given gloves if I ask for it. I also have officers with me to make sure that they don't try to bite me or something like that, but I was never afraid of them.

I always think about HIV when I visit the nail salon and dentist.. both places I go to are very clean so I just shake it off.

I too had to get tested for the life insurance policy- of course it came back negative. I have only been with 2 people in the last 4 yrs so I'm not worried about it enough to get another one since I just got it for the life insurance.

I just think its a good idea to be tested for STDs and HIV every year at your regular physical. I am married and have been with my husband only the last few years but you never know if one day they may decide to do something behind your back and you are then at risk. I am not saying I dont trust him but people make mistakes. It is better to find out you have something in the early stages than years down the road. Your health is at risk. I have never heard about the nail salon or dentist. I had no idea! Thats very scary to think about.

I used to go every six months to the NYC health department to get tested anonymously. Not based on any lifestyle concerns, but I was a volunteer for several years with an AIDS activist and support organization and then for a hospital dealing with AIDS patients, so it was more out of principle and solidarity with the people I worked with.

I haven't in a while -- though I probably was tested before I had surgery 18 months ago. It's always better to know than not -- being afraid of knowing one's physiological self is not wise.

Yes, right before Mr Puff and I got married, it was part of the various procedures required to get a marriage license!

That was in 1996, I imagine most places do it today, so if you are married, you have probably had the test even if you didn't realize it!

Yes. Before I met DBF (with whom I have been monogamous for nearly 11 years), I had a boyfriend who cheated on me with a woman who was reputed to be extremely promiscous. I saw my gyno stat! I was tested for everything they could possibly test for, including HIV. Everything was fine, thank goodness.. Oh, and I sent the cheating jerk the bill for the tests! Believe it or not, he paid it without putting up a fight!

Good for you! He needed to at least pay for your tests after what he put you through!

No, never saw the need! maybe they tested when I was pregnant, wasn't aware if they did!
Scary that you can get it from the dentist, OMG!

Have a funny story, I got a very bad reaction to a mosquito bite when on holidays years ago, I came home & my mother who panics about everything said "You can get AIDS from a mosquito bite" So I hightailed it to the doctor, she said to me "Roz, if you have AIDS you will have a hard time convincing people that you got it from a fly!" ROFL!

I got tested when I was pregnant. I think they test every pregnant woman now so they can give you anti-retroviral meds and prevent transmission to the baby if they need to.

I had the whole thing done as well, Doctor was laughing beacuse I was way more scared of the results of the "diabetes" test than the HIV and STD's. It didnt make sense to him because for obvious reasons. Grandma passed at 62 because of diabetes so it runs in the family, I get really scare everything I check my sugar levels

Everything is good, BTW.
