Default Has anyone had an Ulnar Shortening Procedure???

I injured my wrist at work in Sept. of 2007 and went through all the hoops of Physical Therapy, cortisone injections, etc. and finally had surgery to repair a torn TFC (TFC debridement procedure) in my wrist.

It did not help......at all......there is a low success rate (30%) with the procedure I had and apparently I am a part of that lame success rate

So that surgery was 3 months ago....saw the Doc today and he said if it is not improving and getting better (this procedure takes 6 months to heal) then he wants to do another round of cortisone.....if it wears off and I am still back to square one....meaning PAIN and immobility with pronation and supination then he wants to do an Ulnar Shortening Procedure.

Basically they cut your forearm open on the Ulnar side, shorten the ulnar bone, then put titanium screws and a plate to heal the now shorter bone back together again. This surgery has a really good success rate from what my Doc said and all of the Googling I did on it.

Has anyone had this done before?? Usually there is always someone on tPF that will have experienced something! I would love to hear about it. TIA!

I just had ulnar shortening surgery on 6/19/08. I also had a torn ligament that had to repaired during the surgery. Had a cast on for three weeks after the surgery. I had very little pain after the surgery. Was out of work for only one week and was able to work with my cast for the entire three weeks that it was on. Cast has been off now for several weeks and I am going to therapy two times per week. Do not yet have full range of motion in my wrist but that may come in time. My therapy will go on for anothe r6 weeks and I will most likely be discgarged. I highly recommed that you have the surgery if you are having pain and difficulty now. Do not wait until it is too late because then you will have torn igaments like I did. Also, I do not know where you live, but the Doctor that did my surgery is the top Orthpedic hand Surgeon in the country. He is located in King of Prussia, PA and I highly recommend him.
if you have any other questions, please feel free to e-mail me.
