Does anyone else absolutely LOATHE pap smears?

I hate them, and cannot be comfortable with it. Is it just me? I just want to know if that is unusual. Thanks!

I don't think anyone can say that they like them, they are not comfortable, but at least they are pretty quick and the results provide very important information for us gals.

I actually went to a new gyno yesterday for my regular yearly, and my mom was all nervous for me and asking why I wasn't going to go see a female doctor and whatnot, and for some reason, it just doesn't bother me. At all. To me, it's a body part, and the actual exam lasts like 30 seconds. The guy sees vaginas all day, I'm sure mine isn't special! And it's not like no one's ever seen mine before...

It's not uncommon to be completely uncomfortable with it, from what I can tell, however. My roommate is terrified of the gyno, for reasons that she can't explain. For me, I don't mind it at all. It's usually a lot faster than a regular doctor's appt.

I'm going in for a pap in august with my new doctor, who is a male. He was recommended by my good friend...but I'm still a bit nervous about it. I've never liked it and never will.

It's not the male/female thing that bothers me so much as the actual torture device they use lol. It's just the metal, and I can't get myself to relax. You're right it's over and done with quickly and I would never skip one, but I just can't stand going for one. I had to go today and I made the poor woman take the speculum out the second she started using it. I had to wait a minute before I let her try again.

Never liked 'em, never will. Thank goodness they're quick and easy. For me the part I hate the most is the double shoehorn thing. I hate it so much I don't even know the proper name.

maybe my doctors have used a different kind? i've never had much of a pinch, just a bit of pressure. i know that the one my old doctor used wasn't metal, it was plastic, so that might make a difference i guess. it's never felt much different than, uh, having anything else in there. maybe i've just lucked out?

For me after having kids, it became no big deal. I don't think about it, and when I do have a check-up, it doesn't bother me in the least. I have found some doctors are much more "skilled" than others... :O

This time I hardly felt him take the sample. The speculum has never bothered me as well. My doc uses the metal ones.

Perhaps your doc isn't using enough jelly? But I agree with the above poster that some docs are better than others with that sort of thing.

I think its just the fact that I have to open wide for someone I really dont know that well. I think the foot pedals on the bed intimidate me more than anything.

I agree, the time it takes for the pelvic exam is the worst 10minutes of my year. What was even worse was when I had a cervical polyp removed and my gyn was totally digging around in there. Anyone here ever had to have an internal ultrasound where they stick that wand up there? That was lovely.

^^I have had many internal u/s's!!! After going through those you learn to be pretty comfortable with people looking at your hoo-ha!
