You need to do cardio and watch what you eat. Squats will tone, but if you don't lose overall body fat, you won't lose it there.

I agree with snowqueen. I run a lot and do stair laps, that seems to be helpful in keeping that region looking nice :)!

Inline skating is great for shaping up the butt, hips, and thighs.

Obviously increase your cardio if you're trying to get rid of fat. When I'm mainly focused on sculpting my glutes I usually try to do cardio that primarily involves my upper body (think rowing, for instance) because I found that --at least in my case-- it just doesn't make sense to tire out those muscles BEFORE I've even started training them for the day. But, I very seldom do cardio and weight training in one session anyway because that strategy is simply not consistent with my fitness goals. Normally I train 4 days a week and do an hour of cardio daily for the remaining 3 days.
On the day I do glutes, I do a variation on this:

Dead lifts (4-5 sets of 12-15 reps)
Leg curls (3-4 sets of 15 reps)
Forward Lunges (5 sets of 20 reps)
Squats (3-4 sets of 15-20)

The following day I like to rest the glutes so if it's a weight training day I'll train a muscle group in my upper body (like biceps, triceps or pecs) and if it's a cardio that follows the glutes workout then I'll still try to rest that muscle group by rowing for instance instead of climbing stairs or running!

As already suggested, running and stairs are great.

Squats and brisk walking. Hills are especially good. I also play (ice) hockey and trust me it's GREAT for the boo-tay!
