Thuy - that is SUCH a cool story! And such a sentimental meaning behind your name!

I have a fairly uncommon name and people often ask me how I came to be named that... unfortunately, there's no cool story... just, "uh, my mom just said that she found it in a name book and liked it". <shrug>! Heehee...

Since he wouldn't be around for the birth of his first-born, he asked my mom that if it's a girl, name her Thuy-Duong, to secure a safe journey across the sea for him (hence the meaning of my name). he didn't know, that my mom left by plane with grandma shortly after, heading towards portland where my uncle was at. But then she went into labor on the plane and they had to reroute the entire plane to Thailand and I was born somewhere between plane and Bangkok, but yea, that's another story. :P

I think this is beautiful!!! Would the pleats have a contrasting/complemtary color peeking through? That might be sorta cool...

thanks mangowife, fafnir - the beginning was probably the most difficult/craziest part of my life, hehe, poor parents. RMC had the cool idea of contrasting color pleats, mangowife, so I was thinking about it too. Just not sure what colors though, maybe black shine for the main color, and purple or something for the inverted pleat?

Jordanopolis, thanks! I just heard the thumbs up from some people, just wasn't sure if it passes as a whole :) How's yours coming along? Curious about the rest of you guys too

Thuy..(may I call you this instead of Missty?)...I haven't been able to log on for so long..but finally..internet is up and running. I had to check in here to tell you that I am in awe..simply in awe. I love Uikiyo-e artists...Hiroshige, Utamaro, and so many others. I also worship Klee, Kandinski and an art deco artist Sonia Delaunay who your work and the other amazing artist's who you wondered about making the lining, ZAnPon's work reminds me of so much.(I am not implying it's derivative..or copied..just inspired by)...have you ever seen the work of Vietnamese artist Pham Van Don?

My son is into Manga and anime..(I still do remember my DD was into Sailor Moon for a while..when she was young..and believe it or not back in my youth there was Astroboy, SpeedRacer and other things I have a vague recollection of watching)..I don't venture into his world, but when he shares I am fascinated..some of the work is powerful and the art is dynamic.

The handle reminds me of the wrapped handles of katanas..is that the direction you are going? Is it going to be metal wrapped in leather..all leather..bamboo wrapped in leather..OK..enough..enough..I am dying of curiousity to see where you are going with this..I really am.

Thuy..I am so glad that you won this..because you are so talented and creative that I sincerely believe that this was a marriage made in HHHeaven...I can't wait to see the progress of your DYOB..I hope it goes into production..maybe a limited edition for HH Hotties? I know I would be honored to purchase one..at full price!

All I can say in the end is..I die..I simply die.

Thanks lyuen! Probably the easiest way to get stuff from ZAnPon is from one of the galleries he'll be promoting. He's flying from Japan to the NY area this summer, I think July-ish or August last time we talked and you can get a print or actual drawing. Someone asked me also where they could get his works, and most of them are in galleries in Japan and he's switching between artist collectives (from DIGMEOUT to Imura Art Gallery to get more independence) so it's hard to get a hold his work. I'll ask and keep you guys up to date.

This is the custom drawing he made for me, Happy Wave (his interpretation behind the meaning behind my name)

Someone found it on flickr and tried buying it from me, since they had difficulty finding art from ZAnPon also. Can't do it at all, too special for me...

Mr. ZAnPon himself, pictures I took when I met up with him in Osaka

I gave them my ideas, some pictures and sketches and I'm waiting to hear from them. They said they would start sketching it.
I'm really liking your idea though! I also like the idea of having black with the purple!

Gingeygingey - I love ukiyoe style, kandinksy, klee - spent a lot of time at the Met and MOMA when I was in NYC last time (along with the HH Design shop). I haven't heard of Pham Van Don, but to be honest am not familiar with many Vietnamese artists outside of my family, but am looking him up now. Thanks gingey

Yea Astroboy, I think there's going to be an Astroboy movie released later in the fall this year, hehe. You're such a keen observer, gingey, even though the sketch is really chicken scratchy! You're right about the details about the handles, they are katana-braid inspired:

I scribbled really fast a somewhat cleaner sketch and sent it to HH yesterday asking for guidance of where I can go from here.

I'm not sure how they would interpret the wrapped katana-like braiding detail of the handles, but would like something sturdy that won't unravel easily (thinks clyde tassels when the little leather wrap at the top started unraveling...). Bamboo or metal would sound nice, I'll wait for HH to offer some options.

Yay, glad you like it, gingey I was wondering if the design wouldn't be well-received since it feels like it might have a limited appeal. I called and ask to see if there was a chance that the DYOB would be put into production, or if it simply was just a sample for the winner so I could have in mind what to take into consideration (what's good for just me, or something that more people may generally like). They said if it's something that they like, then maybe they'll add it to production. I should just keep in mind of designing primarily for myself (but would love to have it put into production so wouldn't mind if Toni tweeked it a little more for her liking that she may consider, teehee).

Thanks so much for your support, gingey! It means a lot to me to get feedback and love from everyone.

P.S. I think I'd die without internet, or at least feel really naked. It's my resource/connections for a lot of things, even my phone has connection so I have it at all times. Don't know how you do it gingey, with the copy and paste just in case the internet kaputs, :P

missty4 -- I love how your design is coming along! I would totally buy something like that, with the samurai influence I used to do iaido but it was hard on my knees. How do you envision the opening to work? Pockets on the exterior?

And your ZAnPon print - how very special. His artwork is so dynamic and I love his use of line and color. I'll be on the lookout for his work, if/when he makes it out this way.

Ah, cool, RMC and missty! I must've missed the comment about the pleats earlier in the thread! Rock on! Black and purple would be SO COOL...

missty4,

What an amazing life story you have so far, and your name (and its meaning) is beautiful.

I love the way your bag design is evolving. I think they ought to use your lining ideas too! I don't think HH totally understands how much linings influence our buying decisions (or maybe that's just me).

The special edition pomp didn't do it for me, but it would be great if they did a similar thing with your design, if enough people are willing to order in advance. If the shoulder strap is long enough for me, I'm all over it.
