Default One of very rough concept ideas- Samurai?
I was adding curves to the upper half of the bag and noticed along with the shape, it looked like a samurai helmet. I thought of lulu's idea of adding samurai elements and took it forward, and this is a rough rough outline of something I came up with:

(pay not attention to the applique detail, attempt at a butterfly)

It's still really bare without other details and pockets, but that's the general gist and shape. What do you guys think? I think this would reach a very limited audience and I'm trying to stay away from something too gimmicky/cheesy, but it does look kinda cool and have stage presence. And, I thought it would be fun to add novelty slits on the back for optional katana holder, or at least, rolled documents.

missty, this is very cool. Love the idea of the "samurai" vibe.

Is this going to be a hand-held bag only, or will it have a shoulder strap option? How big are you thinking this will be?

the big loop thing around the second picture would be a braided shoulder strap aka biblio style

Ah, and size. This is very much trophy influenced, so somewhere around there :) I'm just afraid it'll look too corny. If there's a western vibe i.e. Wyeth, why not samurai vibe, hehe.

Thanks skydive! I don't know if I'm going with this one, that's why I thought I should shoot the idea to my expert panel judges . And if anyone is curious on how to pronounce my name, Thuy, it sounds like "twee," like tweety bird. In kindergarten, I saw my teacher spell my name "twee" so I also wrote my name "twee" on the right-hand corner on all my papers because I thought teacher must be right, since teacher is always right, lol.

I love it. I think it's a gorgeous shape. In the first sketch it looks like you have pleating on the bottom...or are those seams? Either way I like it a lot. It totally looks like HH, yet not like something they've done before.

Gotcha. You are hot on the trail, missty! Oh, and I love the detailing on the base of the handles.

At first I was thinking, piping seams that pull the leather up to give a bit of ruching effect, but now that I thought about your comment, it would be better as pleating to give it more 3-dimensionality. Like origami perhaps.

Ack this is hard :/

but fun. :)

Thuy, I had no problem pronouncing your name. One of my best friends in college was named Thuy. Our area was the initial stop and processing center for Vietnamese refugees in the 70's. Thuy was Vietnamese. I think I recall her telling me that her name meant snow flower and the name represented loyalty.

I like the "essence of samurai" in your sketch. I agree with Faf - I like the handle detail. What do you think about the inverted pleats being in a contrasting color - like the inner layer of another color that shows beneath the slits and sleeves of the outer kimono?

So, are you going to have 7 folds to represent the 7 virtues of the Samurai (like the 7 folds of the Hakama)? Hmmmm... I think you could have lots of fun with this venue. Plus, you already have the sketch for the custom tag - your samurai sketch. No pink fabric Paule Merrot tag for this DYOB!

Missty- I am intrigued by your sketches! So do we know for sure that your bag will be mass-produced, or will there only be a sample bag created just for you?

I love HH - I'm not sure if it'll be put into production or not. In the auction description, they had a "who knows, maybe we'll see your bag in stores!" or something like that, but they cut out that part of the description towards the end of the auction so who knows. I did hint them that I'd like to try to see if it more than a sample could be made, hopefully :)

Thanks cinnybuns! I'd love to hear some input from everyone since I'm not sure how this design will fly, haha

RMC - Oh yay someone knows my name :) Thuy means water, but my actual full name is Thuy-Duong (sound like twee-yoong) which means, "calm, blue ocean." When my parents fled from Vietnam, my dad left first by boat, leaving my pregnant mom behind and promised to get her when he arrives safely. Since he wouldn't be around for the birth of his first-born, he asked my mom that if it's a girl, name her Thuy-Duong, to secure a safe journey across the sea for him (hence the meaning of my name). he didn't know, that my mom left by plane with grandma shortly after, heading towards portland where my uncle was at. But then she went into labor on the plane and they had to reroute the entire plane to Thailand and I was born somewhere between plane and Bangkok, but yea, that's another story. :P

I really like your ideas RMC! Kimono sleeves and virtues, this will be challenging/fun! :)
