Congrats Thuy on the DYOB project! Maybe you can purchase a fabric that you love & send it to them to line your bag. Maybe something from Tokyo so it will have a special feel to it. Maybe a beautiful silk or silk like fabric! This is so exciting even though it's not for any of us! Please keep us posted. I think you can tell we're very happy for you!

Thanks for all the kind comments and encouragement, everyone! I'm really excited, but also feel kind of pressured to make something awesome and make this totally worth it :P

syb, I would love a yam tharpe (I'll hunt that baby and snag it one day). I admire the design of the tharpe, but I want to try at creating something that isn't in the HH line yet. Hopefully it won't be a fugly frankenbag in an attempt of aesthetics but failing function or vice versa, that's my greatest fear. But I have the HH team to reel me in if it steers in that direction, lol.

Jennirane - thanks for your faith in me . I'll try my best! ZAnPon is an amazing person and I'm lucky to know someone like him. I first met him a couple years back when DIGMEOUT came to Portland for an exhibition and did some commission work for NIKE. Last time we talked he'll have a show in NY sometime this summer for anyone that's interested. You can see more of his work here:

I love how within one big picture there are many other smaller things going on. It's messy and clean at the same time, the contrast is great.

lulu - Hehe, you did the bag-strap for belt thing too? I shot the idea to a friend and she agreed, that there were some bags that had chain shoulder straps that she wish she could wear as a belt. Don't think I'd like a chain strap though, looking for not so much hardware for the traveling. Iono, I wouldn't want anything to look "gimicky" and it was a wild-card idea I threw in there. Afraid that it might take away from the "classy."

RMC - I didn't realize it involved hundreds of yardage fabric to produce a sample. Granted, it was something that I really looked forward too. I called HH and asked if there were any limitations to the DYOB, and the person who answered put me on hold for a moment to ask, and replied, "No limitations." I should've known that wasn't the answer I was looking for :P One idea I was thinking about was having red and black octopus print with linking arms, keep it simple. Offering to source a printed lining is pretty cool also, I wonder what Toni will come up with? Thanks for the compliments on the sketch, I'm trying to go for more abstract nowadays.

some older work if anyone is interested:

tried doing watercolor, brush control is something to learn

You're right about ZAnPon, very Kadinsky influenced (he even admitted himself).

I'm thinking about delicate leather piping (like 2mm thick?) somehow on a bag, but afraid it might make it look too "sporty." Ack, ideas...

oh yes, takeshi kaneshiro Love him in the Wong Kar Wai movie, Chungking Express, syb

lulu
- thanks for the compliment. The drawing is still in my sketchbook, but I can't claim all originality of it since I was making fanart getting inspiration to test watercolor with. It's based off of Musashi, one of the greatest samurais from the manga, Vagabond (check it!)

^^ Possibly one of the most perfect beings on the planet. Seriously.

I digress. I am a fan of piping, personally :)

Missty, thanks for the links... I'm totally taken by his work. Very Kandinsky, as RMC said, but more movement/energy.

And since we went that way, can anyone (PM me) recommend a good baseball Manga to start with? I want to get into it but am overwhelmed, and heard that there's a whole subgenre about baseball... that might be do-able.

The fear of the blank canvas??? You're doing what I would do... starting with words. Slouchy yet structured (I'm seeing the loose but geometric lines of say a Mercer satchel here). You're a turtle. A hermit crab. You need SPACE in that bag (see the Beatrice) but COMPARTMENTS (see the Corcovado and Tharpe). Your house on your back. A cross-body/convertible? I'm thinking of those backpacks that break down into day packs. A Wyeth-like large hobo-tote that unzips in the middle? Like saddlebags that come apart? The front, smaller one flops over the larger one (like the Wyeth or the Havana) but it's a separate bag?

You should make Toni a mix CD to listen to as she works with you, since she uses music so often for inspiration!

And I LOVE LOVE LOVE the idea of the Octopus print!!

Ooooooh, Faf! You're on to something! Missty, take the odd little short video as you're sketching and see someone will do the same at the other end, as Toni's working with your sketches!!! Now I'm wishing for a handbag version of Project Runway!

Jenni, I should make a video of the process? And have the other 4 winners do the same? Is that what you're asking? Hehe, ooh how embarrassing... usually I'm just lying in bed in my pjs when I sketch

My guess is that you're adorable in your jammies, since you're stunning in anything else you wear! OK... so not WHILE you're sketching, but after, sort of explaining what you're envisioning, what you'd like the lines of the bag to do, all of that... even artists have to do interviews!
