Default Front Applique try #36581
I'm attaching the sketches of your flap applique ideas, so you can see it as a whole. I think I'm most partial to the "curvy heart," it echoes the round lines of the bag but isn't too "soft." I also like the extra texture from the diagonal stitchlines, it's unintrusive but adds something special.

For the middle: perhaps if I extend the side bars to a more obtuse angle so it won't look so "smooshed?"

I get mailers from Joshua Liner Gallery (formerly Linage Gallery) I thought that looked familiar in the mailer for the month. That is soo cool! I've always wanted to have my art shown there.

WHEN CAN I BUY THE GOLDFISH!!! Seriously! I love it! ITA with Paelaf it looks better

Thanks for the revision, paelaf I like the stud additions, reminds me of a floating dandelion and leaf. :)

Pretty cool they were able to use my specs from the model I sent them:

I think it's time for me to get illustrator

Thuy, the goldfish is adorable!!
But have to say, that bit that attaches it to the dogclip looks like the zipper pulls that are constantly coming undone on my Corcovado... surely it's not just looped through there?

Ooh, that goldfish is perfection! I think it has a good chance of going into production based on the fact that the sketches say Spring 2010 at the top. :) That's what I want to think, anyways!

I don't know much about design, but paelaf's version of your bag looks gorgeous, missty - it's elegant but still has a mellow vibe. Sort of like a more playful version of the Trophy.

Thuy, I am so loving this bag. I like the left two best and tend to agree with HH and Paelaf that the softer curve to the two inside petals of the lotus looks the best. See, I still see a lotus flower there.

I want me a goldfish! I don't do mushrooms. I just couldn't get into those. But that origami goldfish is awesome. I can see HH doing a whole line of origami purse charms. I would buy the goldfish, the swan, a crane - or since it's spring, maybe a robin. What a collection that would be.

lulu - ooh, does this mean you might pop on by to the Joshua Liner gallery. I'm thinking about maybe a trip to NY, and a lil' visit to HH:design

jennirane - true, I see what you mean. My zipper pull tassel for the BP corc, I found out too late, undid itself and went lost somewhere in the streets of Portland. I kinda just did only the main origami goldfish part, and drew a line up from the top fin to illustrate I want something attached there to hang, but didn't really specify and left it loose for Joanne to interpret. I like what she did, the folded-tied tassel gives it more origami charm. I was thinking, another stitch can be added to the top as the bottom? Or perhaps, add a little HH stud to secure the top (but would the knot have to be done away if it's too much detail with both the knot and stud)?

aviatrix - When I first got the PDF files and saw Spring 2010, I was thinking the same. I'd like to think they grew to love it and decided to add it in their line. Plus a charm isn't too much of a gamble, and it seems like a hit with everyone (when I first introduced it to Joanne over the phone her reaction was, "Oh, that's pretty cute.") I'm just not so sure with the bag. To me, it still doesn't feel like a strong piece. I think I'm going through my doubts... would it be popular? I know it's made for me, and I don't really keep in mind about creating a general, friendly bag - but I can't help think about how it will do if it were released. Was the contrasting color a good idea (a risk right there to introduce more than one color to a bag, perhaps it drops it a notch from classiness)? Is it too busy for a bag? Ah, doubts... :/

RMC - wouldn't it be amazing if they did a whole origami charm line for spring? That would be so fun! Trying to think designs I would nominate, hmm...

I made the decision about the name of the bag. It will not be a Thuy bag. It'll be a Thanh, named after my grandmother.

Thuy... yeah, I see what you mean about the origami ref in the knot. I'd try to make sure that they run a stitch across it, like you said. Those things come undone way too much--you might lose your precious goldfish! Yep, I think a stud up there would be too much, but I'd love to see one at the tip of his tail!! (It would be too gimmicky as an eye, right?) What are the leathers going to be for him? All one color? Multiples? They've never really had an orange, have they? YAM SHINE!!!

A simple stitch would work. :) I was thinking about yam. Or maybe, yam and yam shine contrasting

Thuy, your bag is going to be amazing! Forget your doubts. I go through this all the time with design projects--even a fairly weak piece, once it's printed and comes to life, is so much better (unless of course you're using a crap printer) and so exciting! And your design is thoughtful and beautiful. I'm sure you won't be disappointed. The contrast leather gives it a little more personality and more of a fun vibe. So it just depends what you're looking for. If you would rather keep it more classic and safe, stick with one leather or one color and different types. But it seems like you've been into the contrasting color idea all along--no reason to doubt yourself, it's going to be great!

I love that you've named it after your Grandmother! And I agree with Paelaf... although I don't do visual design, I've been teaching creative writing for a dozen years now and working with students on senior projects, getting them ready for MFAs and publishing... there's always a moment when one little thing throws the whole project into doubt. I always tell them when you start getting that tight little worried knot in your stomach about it it's time to walk away for a bit. Read something you love (or visit an art gallery!) and let it sit. Our subconscious minds will be working on it even when our conscious minds aren't.

So after a while, ask yourself IF you went with all one color, which color would it be and what would it look like? IF you went with one color/contrasting leathers (like yam and yam shine) what would the bag look like? If you went with your original idea of Eucalyptus and white... get more swatches, or have RMC mock you up something with her skillz... and then go with your gut.

I will say that as a Yam lover, I love Paelaf's idea of contrasting textures/same color... but that would be MY bag. The bag you've designed is thoughtful, lovely, feminine, and strong. I don't know that it's ever called out "classy" to me... but I deal in words and "classy" is RM or old Coach. You've got too much energy and creativity to be merely "classy". And I think the contrast between the Euc and the white/bone color won't be jarring or busy... I think it will be soothing, strangely, which is just the note the strength of the bag needs.

*sigh* I sorta hope that HH decides FOR me with the fall line and only the Trophy OR the Trophy Satchel get made in Yam Shine... that way I wouldn't have to choose.

There hasn't really been a big bag made in Yam, right? No Trophys or Beas or anything. The Havana would have been the biggest.
