Wow, nobody here has cable! Me neither! I watch my TV on the internet.

@fafnir -- those cellphone wireless services can be slooooow -- I'd definitely try before you buy on that one. I've got DSL and I do love it.

I have cable...but it was a gift from my grandparents. My "christmas present" last year was a year of cable. Unless they decide to "renew", then I won't have cable next year...but that creates a problem for my internet access because that is through my cable right now...Hmmm...I do use Netflix though to cut down on movie rental fees and if I do go to the theatre I almost always try to make a matinee.

Normally when I "declutter" I would just take everything straight to the Goodwill, but I think I can dip my toe in the pond and check out eBay or maybe Bonanzle or etsy!
I usually declutter by donating too, but I've bought so many bags lately that I really need to recoup at least some of the cost. That Goldenbleu going out of business sale was a killer. I think I bought six clutches, and I've never carried a clutch in my life.

I've gotten as far as buying a book about ebay, but haven't even opened it. I have a terrible habit of buying "useful" books, and not using them. (Mysteries, on the other hand, I read by the cartload.)

In the past, a large percentage of the "clutter" was books, mostly the aforementioned mysteries, but now I mostly buy ebooks; unfortunately, they're not much cheaper, and I buy a lot more since they don't take up space and are not a visual reminder of the amount bought.

@disconnected -- here is my house! Hahaha. Talk about a problem with books. Fortunately, I buy a lot of secondhand, and they are cheap! I am super-organized with the books though so they don't contribute to the clutter-- everything ELSE contributes to the clutter!

^^Impressive collection! But that's still nothing compared to my grandma and her book collection.

"Good habits are worth being fanatical about" as written by John Irving and it has stuck with me since reading that darn book (HOTEL NEW HAMPSHIRE).

Almost ALWAYS buy on sale......and keep the tags on stuff....cuz heck, IF you haven't worn it/used it in a month...than most likely you WON'T and you should return it (IF returnable, of course).

I clean out my closet at least once a year and take stuff to the consignment store OR I give stuff away to "fambly" and friends. My issue is not money.....it's excess. Don't like it. Reminds me of gluttony. I use, I don't "collect".

Pigs get fat - hogs get slaughtered.

I prefer being piggish, not hoggish!

Balance, moderation and I remind myself everyday that I have true luxuries....and I'm lucky and should be so thankful.

This gets me through the stages when I "want things".....cuz honestly, I really don't "NEED" 'em.

I know, BORING BORING BORING......that's why I'm the resident HOTTIE VOR!!!!

Stormy and toni - great thread......balance=good karma!

My Parents buy and sell old used books. So we get the run off of there habit. My mom at least once a month hands me a box of books and says "here is our house payment" * I pay for my parents assisted living mortgage and just pocket the books* This is a picture of our library on the main level. We have an almost identical book shelves *minus one shelf* up stairs with modern books. We haven't yet renovated this part of the house.... It's lookin a bit on the 80s side LOL

Back to the topic of being kinda broke and semi banned.... I've been rotating my closet more. I only can keep 20 bags (It sounds like a allot but it's allot less than what I used to have) I've been pretty regular about selling the things I don't want or don't fit right once a month. It has been keeping my costs pretty low. I've been doing something very similar to Leothelnss. Only using money from my paypal account to buy new bags. It's really been working great for me.

I think the paypal acct idea is awesome and I'm going to try that out for myself.

I agree, I'm going to try and rid my closet of a bit of clutter this w/e! I haven't bought a bag since February I think (may have actually been March) and I discovered an "exercise" that's really working for me...

When I get close to buying a bag, I go to photobucket and look at each page of my bag collection. I'm oohing and aahing and then feeling guilty b/c I haven't carried a great deal of them. Works like a charm!

@dcblam -- all great words to live by!
@lulu -- what a great library! I do like your idea of just restricting your bag habit to the paypal account. I might have to try that. I have accumulated quite a pile of "stuff" I think I'm going to try to flog on the bay.
@toni -- your idea of taking pics of your collection and looking it over when you want to buy more is GREAT. Wonderful therapy to encourage you not to buy!

I am normally a very conservative spender; however, due to a new job I had to shop for work clothing. I discovered this forum about the same time and as a result I completely went off the rails. Now I have to pay off a chunk of CC debt, get a roof for the house, and build up my "emergency" fund again in case work dries up. Last year was tough for me. I got laid off, I found a job, but that was a political job so it ended in November (we lost, bummer), got this new job in January. Actually last year was a really sucky year all around for me so is it any wonder I went off the rails with the shopping therapy when I could!? Heh. But I will dig myself out of this hole, tout suite!

Happy Easter, all!

Move. LOL- we just did (2 weekends ago), and we're makin' $$ off it in a few ways.
1. Donations to Goodwill for a receipt (future write off)
2. Ebay'in it on stuff that I feel confident will sell for a good price
3. Local Buffalo Exchange (very popular resaler) for all of my other clothes/shoes that it was time were out of my life

We (BF & I) really thinned out our wardrobes, and not only did we make some money, but it feels good! Honestly, that fab red dress in a size 6 I've been holding on to just needs to go. I may never be a size 6 again, and if I ever am, well I'll buy a new red dress then!

How y'all doin? I haven't been around for a few weeks - work, lack of work, moving, stress, family visits, etc. It's been over the top hectic, but am seeing a bit of a slow down this week. Phew.

Oh by the way - I've latched onto this thread because I am broke and need a ban. But I don't think I have the will power - cold turkey doesn't work well for me. So semi-ban sounds pretty good

Word of caution to those trying to purge via EvilBay...I just got hit with one of their infamous selling restrictions. Can't sell any more bags for another 30 days. And in case you're wondering, I've never owned or sold any of the highly faked bags a la LV, Chanel, Bal or Gucci. Never sold any Coach or Fendi. More of a discussion for the EvilBay forum but wanted to let my indie pals know it affects us too.

Hey Syb -- could you tell me (us) where to go to find out more info about this selling restriction? I've never heard of it! Thanks and sorry to hear that happened to you!

Wow Syb, I've never worried too much about that since the only bags I've sold recently are HH...that really sucks!! I thought they only slapped those on the popular brand sellers.
